Blood donors urged to give gift of life this holiday season

LifeServe Blood Center is urging eligible blood donors to roll up a sleeve and give the ultimate gift this holiday season: the gift of life. Blood cannot be manufactured in a lab and there is no substitute for it. In order to ensure blood will be available for local hospital patients in their critical time of need depends on generous donors to make that lifesaving gift.

The standard blood donation process only takes an hour start to finish, with the actual blood collection procedure only lasting about ten minutes. One donation can save the lives of up to three local hospital patients. Be a holiday hero, schedule an appointment at an upcoming blood drive in the local community.

The Waukon Community Blood Drive is scheduled for Monday, December 10 from 12-5 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 614 Rossville Road. Schedule a blood donation appointment online at lifeservebloodcenter.org or call 800-287-4903.

And then I wrote...

in honor of Dick Schilling, "Editor Emeritus"

... that it is with a very heavy heart that these are my words filling this column space this week, rather than the rightful author who has done so for longer than I have even been alive.

For those not yet aware, and who are looking for the usual wit and wisdom of the man who committed a vast majority of his life to informing, enlightening, educating and even entertaining this Waukon community he also called home for nearly all his life, it is with deep regret that I must tell you that Richard “Dick” J. Schilling, long-time editor - and more recently, editor emeritus - of this newspaper, was found deceased in his home this past Tuesday, November 27 - ironically, the same day of the week he would faithfully bring to the newspaper office for publication the column that usually appears in this space.
