Lorraine was born March 8, 1924 at the family home place in New Albin, a daughter of Louis and Lena (Kuntz) Hammel. She was raised and educated in New Albin and graduated from New Albin High School with the Class of 1942. Following her high school education, Lorraine worked for a peach canning factory in Illinois until enlisting with the United States Navy. While in the Navy, Lorraine was a teletype operator in Washington, D.C. and a munitions inspector for four years when she received her honorable discharge from military service in 1946.
Lorraine decided to move to California after her military service. Lorraine and Howard Moericke were married October 9, 1948 in North Hollywood, CA and to this union three children were born. She was a devoted wife and mother and had moved across the country following her husband's military career. After his retirement, they moved to a small farm in Westby, MT and later Lorraine moved again to Williston, ND.
Lorraine worked several different jobs before starting work at K-Mart, where she remained until she retired in 1994. In 2011, Lorraine wanted to be closer to her family, so she moved to Glendive, MT and lived in the Heritage Assisted Living until 2012 when she moved to the Eastern Montana Veterans Home.
Lorraine thoroughly enjoyed gardening and she always had produce from her garden to give to her family and friends. She was also a wonderful seamstress, and she loved taking care of her grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Eugene Hammel and Frank Hammel; two sisters, Stacia Kavon and Mary Lou Blackmore; and one grandson, Benjamin Bromberg.
Lorraine is survived by her three children, Kimberly (Ron) D'Angelo of Emigrant, MT, Ronald (Ruth) Moericke of Vergas, MN and Kathleen (Loren) Voss of Circle, MT; nine grandkids; 11 great-grandkids; one sister, Rose Zoll of New Albin; one brother, Leo Hammel of Wichita Falls, TX; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
