Tribe upsets No. 8 WSR

Joe Miller scores 1,000th point in win at Waverly...
Waukon senior Joe Miller scored the 1,000th point of his four-year varsity career last Friday, Feb. 11, as the Indians posted a 56-54 upset win over eighth-rated Waverly-Shell Rock. Miller surpassed the milestone with a three-pointer in the first quarter of the contest and finished the night with 21 points. Miller is just the second WHS boys basketball player to reach 1,000 points. Scott Sawyer, a 1982 graduate, was the first. He finished his career with 1,254 points.

College Recap

Christa Hammel (Fr., F) collected 14 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal Feb. 9 as Upper Iowa downed Grinnell, 90-75. Feb. 13, Hammel had 6 points, 7 boards, 1 assist, a pair of blocks, and a steal as the Peacocks suffered a 73-67 loss to Waldorf.

Erica Langland (So., G) and the Coe Kohawks posted wins over Wartburg (69-62) and Cornell (86-33) and also fell to Simpson (71-43) during the past week. Langland had 3 points, 1 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal in the stretch.

Girls sweep regular season with wins over Oelwein, WSR

For the second straight year, the Waukon girls basketball team rounded out the regular season without a loss. The Indians downed Northeast Iowa Conference competitors Oelwein and Waverly-Shell Rock in the final week of the season to take their second consecutive league title.
Decorah finished second in the NEIC with a 10-2 mark while Charles City took third after an 8-4 season.
Overall, the top-rated Tribe has won 49 consecutive contests and sports a 21-0 standing for the season.

Treasure the kids; respect the game

Another season of competition is winding down and very soon the tournament season will start in swimming, wrestling, and basketball. Enthusiasm and emotions are peaking as many teams go after the same prize. With that in mind, the following thoughts take on added meaning.

WHS athletes to be inducted into Wall of Fame this Friday

Several Waukon Senior High athletes will be inducted into the WHS Wall of Fame during halftime of this Friday's boys basketball game with Charles City. Athletes to be honored have been named to an All-State squad or participated on a team that scored a high finish in state competition.

Freshman girls win three of four

Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Waukon freshman girls basketball team suffered a 43-35 loss at the hands of Lansing.
Peyton Wacker led the Indian offense with ten points while Rachel Berns added eight. Kati Nolting and Brianne Sivesind chipped in four points each, Kayla Schellhammer added three, and Brianne Bjerke, Allison Eickelberg, and Lindsay Drips each contributed two.
Berns pulled down seven rebounds and Bjerke grabbed four.
Defensively, Bjerke snagged five steals and Eickelberg and Wacker each secured three. Sivesind also denied a Hawk shot.

Freshman boys defeat North Fayette, fall to Oelwein, Charles City, Decorah

Waukon's freshman boys basketball squad scored a 57-43 win over North Fayette Dec. 14.
The Indians jumped to a 16-11 lead after the first period and held a 30-21 advantage by halftime. Waukon continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Hawks by a 27-22 margin in the third and fourth combined to take their third consecutive win of the season.
Nick Kruger dumped in a team-high 12 points and Colin Egan and Tyler Hanson finished with ten points each. Ryan Anderson added nine.

Teams needed for pair of NAYS basketball tournaments

North American Youth Sports will host a pair of area spring basketball tournaments. Openings still remain for the March 19 event at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Entry fee is $95 per team with teams guaranteed two games. Entry deadline is Feb. 25.
April 22-24 NAYS will hold competitions at Clarke College in Dubuque. A $105 fee is charged for the Dubuque tournament with deadlines due April 1.
Both tournaments feature boys and girls divisions in ten age brackets including fifth-sixth grade, seventh grade, eighth grade, ninth-tenth grade, and 11th-12th grade.
