Chad Root of Waukon, 41, has been charged with possessing firearms as a felon, attempting to manufacture methamphetamine, conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine, and possession of pseudoephedrine. The charges are contained in a Superseding Indictment filed June 5 in U.S. District Court, Cedar Rapids.

The 2013 Allamakee County Dairy Parade traversed the streets of Waukon Monday, June 3, with a number of area businesses, families and organizations providing entries to pay tribute to the dairy industry. Evident in this year's parade were several entries from businesses serving the industry that, literally, featured tanks as their way of saying "tank" you to those they partner with in making their dairy products available for all to enjoy.

An abundance of rain mid-week this past week put most of northeast Iowa in a constant state of flood warning or flood watch, as area rivers rose with the added moisture. The Upper Iowa River in northern Allamakee County was no exception, as measurements of two to three inches of rain reported in the area Wednesday, May 29 pushed the river to the very edge of its banks and in some cases over its banks. Campers along the Upper Iowa kept a watchful eye on the river as it proposed a bit of a threat to their campsites (as evident in the photo at right), although that threat was never realized.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors held its weekly meeting last Tuesday, May 28 due to the Memorial Day holiday Monday, May 27 and reconvened Monday, June 3. Coverage of both meetings appears below.

During the upcoming "Thunder in the Park" Civil War re-enactment, June 8-9 at Waukon City Park, visitors to the event are encouraged to stop by the gazebo being occupied by local quilting enthusiasts to try their hand at the age-old pastime. No experience is necessary, just enthusiasm. Anyone can put in some stitches, much like women did back in the 1860s. Women have been quilting for centuries, but it was during the Civil War that quilts became part of the soldiers' lives. In 1861, the United States Sanitary Commission was formed to improve conditions for injured soldiers.

The Big Pumpkin Contest will be celebrating its sixth season this fall and is scheduled to take place September 29 in Waukon. Entry deadline for those wishing to participate in the contest has been set for June 15. There are limited seeds available for this year's contest, and the registration fee to enter a pumpkin in the contest also includes two meal tickets for the event.
Further details about this year's contest, as well as the Pork Loin Cook-Off and Pumpkin Bake-Off competitions, will be released at a later date.
