This year’s New Albin Days celebration will be held this weekend, Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1. The festival grounds will open at 5 p.m. Friday and opening ceremonies will be held at 5:30 p.m., including the Little Miss New Albin pageant. Maiden Dixie will provide live entertainment Friday night from 8 p.m. until midnight.

The Allamakee County Dairy Promotion Board would like to invite the public to its Annual Dairy Days Parade, which will be held in Waukon Monday, June 3, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The parade will start at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds, travel south down Allamakee Street, west on Main Street, back north on Second Street NW to Eighth Avenue NW, where it will then travel east back to the Fairgrounds.

Allamakee County Emergency Management is sponsoring a June 14 training session entitled "Crisis Management for School-Based Incidents - Partnering Rural Law Enforcement and the Local School Systems." The training is an eight-hour, DHS-approved course designed to educate rural law enforcement personnel as well as school administrators and staff on the elements that would allow for an effective response to school-based emergencies.

The 160th Allamakee County Fair will present a mix of new country with some old familiarity when this year's grandstand musical entertainment hits the stage during the annual event, July 17-21. Texas-based country music newcomer JT Hodges and rockin' country conglomerate The New Black 7, featuring Waukon native Jason Herman on guitar, will be the musical acts headlining this year's grandstand entertainment Thursday, July 18, beginning at 7 p.m.

Area residents and visitors are invited to join Allamakee Economic Development and Tourism for a summer adventure exploring the historical, cultural and natural treasures of Allamakee County. The 2013 Driftless Safari program will run from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with 20 exciting places to visit and learn about.

A bi-partisan agreement reached by Iowa lawmakers last week will keep the Luster Heights correctional facility open next year. State Rep. Patti Ruff has been working on the issue since session began after the Governor proposed closing the facility.
“The bi-partisan compromise is great news for our community and our friends and neighbors who work at Luster Heights,” said Ruff.  “My sincere thanks to all the people who contacted legislators and helped keep Luster Heights open.”
