Kee basketball boys let pair of OT contests slip away

The Kee High boys basketball team played a full schedule of four games in six nights this past week, and that schedule got even fuller when two of those four games went into overtime. The long week took its toll, however, as the Hawks started out the week with a 44-41 win over Mabel-Canton, Monday, February 2, faltered at home against Sumner-Fredericksburg, 60-51, Tuesday, February 3, and then surrendered back-to-back overtime losses at home, 62-58 to Valley Friday, February 6 and 57-47 to Turkey Valley Saturday, February 7.

Sunday accident on Highway 76

Sunday, February 8 at approximately 2:35 a.m., the Allamakee Sheriff's Department received a report of a one-vehicle accident on Highway 76 nine miles north of Waukon. Robert Joseph McCormick of Waukon, age 51, was reported as traveling south when his vehicle left the roadway and struck the bridge over Mineral Creek. The vehicle overturned and came to rest in the water. McCormick was transported by ambulance to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

Piano in the Country students participate in IMTA Auditions

The IMTA (Iowa Music Teachers Association) Northeast Iowa District Pre-College Competitive Piano Auditions were held Saturday, January 31 at Luther College in Decorah. The purpose of the Piano Auditions is the promotion of comprehensive musicianship.

Area students to compete in Invention Convention

The 22nd Annual Invention Convention, sponsored by Keystone Area Education agency (AEA), will be held at two sites this year, including Johnson's Banquet Hall in Elkader for northern school districts Tuesday, February 17, and at Table Mound Elementary School in Dubuque for southern school districts Thursday, February 19. The event is open to students in grades K-8. There will be a morning and an afternoon session at each site.

Jose Cole Circus coming to Lansing March 2

The Lansing Lions Club will sponsor a performance of the Jose Cole Circus in the Kee High gymnasium Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

The featured performer will be Crystal Diamond, one of the many acts scheduled to perform. She will "engage in artistic feats of strength and agility" on the Roman Rings. Advance tickets may be purchased at New Albin Savings Bank, Moore's IGA, The Red Geranium, Touch of Class Beauty Shop and Welsh's Village Farm and Home. Advance ticket sales will close March 1 at 5 p.m. Tickets will also be available at the door beginning at 6 p.m. March 2.

Valentine's Day breakfast in Ferryville

The Ferryville, WI Vision and Promotion Board will sponsor a Valentine's Day breakfast Saturday, February 14 from 8-11 a.m. at the Ferryville Village Hall. Featured will be Virginia's home-made heart-shaped biscuits and gravy. Pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, milk and coffee will also be on the menu. The new Riverview Park in Ferryville was made possible by previous Ferryville Vision and Promotion Board fundraisers. The next project will be a historical marker dedicated to former Governor Patrick Lucey, a former resident of Ferryville.

Essay contest winners

Ladies Auxiliaries to VFW Post #5603, New Albin, and Post #5981, Lansing are pleased to announce that Rylee Hanson, 5th grade, won second place in the Ninth District for her essay on "What do the Stars and Stripes Mean to Me." Emily Benzing, 4th grade, wrote on "Veterans Help us Because." She took first place in Ninth District and first place in the state judging. The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations from community residents for Waukon's "Person of the Year" honor. This is the 12th year the Chamber will bestow the honor upon a Waukon resident fitting the award's criteria.

Nadean Trudo

Nadean (Forde) Trudo, age 81, of Rogers, AR, formerly of Clermont, died January 31, 2009 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, February 5 in the Chapel of Callison-Lough Funeral Home in Bentonville, AR, officiated by Monsignor David LeSieur. Graveside services were held Monday, February 9 at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, Clermont.
