The Allamakee County Community Foundation (ACCF) has announced the recipients of its grant awards for 2011.  Forty grant applications were submitted requesting over $238,000 in total funding.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors will hold two public hearings Monday, April 4 to hear public input on a proposed flood plain ordinance that would make the County eligible to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Both hearings will be held in the Board of Supervisors Room on the first floor of the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon. The first hearing will be held during the Board’s regular Monday meeting at 10 a.m. and the second hearing will be held Monday evening at 7 p.m.

State Senator Mary Jo Wilhelm and State Representative Bob Hager will be hosting another series of Listening Post sessions that will include a Saturday, April 2 session in Waukon. This Saturday's Listening Post will take place at 11 a.m. in Room 101 at the Waukon Wellness Center, which is located at 1220 Third Avenue NW.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) was not detected in three elk harvested last month in Allamakee County, according to a release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). A brain sample from another elk found dead March 4 has also been collected, but those test results have not yet been completed.

A pair of 14-year-old juveniles from the Dubuque area face multiple charges after a Tuesday, March 22 spree of criminal mischief that ultimately ended up in a high speed pursuit and vehicle roll-over. A 14-year-old female juvenile from Waukon ultimately became a passenger in the vehicle at some point prior to the high speed pursuit.

Northeast Iowa Community College President Penny Wills hosted about two dozen Waukon area business and organization leaders in one of her recently traditional “Perkin’ With Penny” roundtable sessions. The event was held Wednesday morning, March 16 at the NICC Waukon Center and included an informational update from President Wills on NICC, as well as a question and comment session for those in attendance.

Once high school classmates, teammates and friends, Captain Josh Tweedy, an F-15 pilot based out of Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, and Staff Sergeant Craig Stott, RAVEN (force protection/anti-terrorism advisor) based out of Dover, DE, recently met up in Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. After graduating from Waukon High School (WHS) in 2000 and going their separate ways, the two have crossed paths now for the third time since they began their respective Air Force careers.
