Three candidates on June 14 special election ballot for Supervisor

Allamakee County Auditor Pam Benjegerdes reports that three candidates will appear on the ballot in the special election scheduled for June 14 to fill the vacant seat on the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors.
After reconvening their convention Monday, May 16, Allamakee County Republicans nominated former State Senator Mark Zeiman of Postville as the party’s candidate for the position.
Tuesday, May 17, Allamakee County Democrats reconvened their convention and nominated former Chairman of the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors Lennie Burke as the party’s candidate.

Andrew Brummel to present featured Memorial Day address in Waukon May 30

Andrew G. Brummel of rural Harpers Ferry will serve as featured speaker at the 2011 Memorial Day Observance Program being held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon Monday, May 30. In addition to the traditional F-16 Fighter Jet Flyover that takes place in conjunction with the program, there will also be Cannon Salutes for POW/MIA Awareness and Civil War Sesquicentennial Recognition that will include the live firing of a black powder cannon and a 12-pound Mountain Howitzer, respectively, by Allen, Linda and Noah Lyon of Waukon.

Early deadlines for Memorial Day holiday

Due to the Memorial Day holiday Monday, May 30, the news and advertising deadlines for the June 1 editions of The Standard and Northeast Iowa Extra publications have been moved up. Deadline for submitting an advertising or news item for those June 1 publications will now be Wednesday, May 25 by 12 Noon.
The Standard office will not be open Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. The Northeast Iowa Extra will be available for pick-up and delivery after Monday, May 30, and The Standard will be available for pick-up and delivery according to its regular schedule.

Huge crowd enjoys Veterans Memorial Hospital Family Wellness Fair May 11

The annual “Family Wellness Fair” was held Wednesday, May 11 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Over 400 individuals attended the wellness fair and enjoyed all the information and activities provided by over 40 agencies and businesses that serve Allamakee County. The “Family Wellness Fair” is held in conjunction with the hospital’s “In Step with VMH” Community Wellness program.

Nomination papers due this Friday for special Supervisor election

Nomination forms by petition for the upcoming special election scheduled to fill the vacancy on the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors caused by the untimely death of chairman Cloy Kuhse are available at the Allamakee County Auditor’s office in the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon. The forms require 96 signatures and must be delivered back to the Auditor’s office by 5 p.m. this Friday, May 20. The special election has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 14.

Gov. Branstad, Lt. Gov. Reynolds to hold town hall meeting in Waukon May 24

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds will be holding a town hall meeting in Waukon Tuesday, May 24 at 10 a.m. The event will take place at the Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank Community Room, located at 201 Main Street in Waukon.
