Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $30 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $10 (additonal photos are also $10). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 20") will also incur an additional charge of $9/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 20-inch column length. Mary Jean Sivesind

Mary Jean Sivesind, 82, of Bakersfield, CA, formerly of Waukon, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Divine Mercy Guest Home in Bakersfield, CA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Pastor Kurt Bockoven officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and at the church for an hour before services Saturday.

A memorial service will also be held later this month in Bakersfield, CA for family and friends that are unable to travel to Iowa for her burial.

Mary Jean Sivesind was born February 15, 1935 in Waukon, the daughter of John Elder and Myrtle Aletta (Gavle) Tangen, and was baptized and confirmed at Big Canoe Church. She graduated from Waukon High School, where she proudly served during her senior year as the Principal’s Personal Assistant.

Michael Moose

Michael Ray Moose, 45, of Waukon died Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society in West Union, where he resided for his last six days. A visitation will be held Saturday, May 6 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. A private family burial will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Michael Ray Moose was born May 29, 1971 to Charlotte Moose in Iowa City. He was baptized July 1, 1971 and confirmed in April of 1985 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon. Mike graduated from Waukon High School.

Colleen Houser

Colleen Marie (Collins) Houser, 76, of Westerville, OH, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Saturday, April 29, 2017. Visitation is Friday, May 5 from 4-7 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Church, located at 6077 Sharon Woods Boulevard in Columbus, OH. Funeral mass is Saturday, May 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Colleen’s memory be made to the University Women’s Club of Ohio State scholarship fund at https://www.osuwomensclub.org/scholarships, the fund supported by proceeds from Buckeye Bargains.

Betty DeBuhr

Betty A. DeBuhr, 91, of Waukon died Thursday, April 27, 2017 at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 2 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Salem Cemetery, rural Waukon.

Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements. Memorials can be made to Veterans Memorial Hospital or Salem Cemetery Fund, both in Waukon.

Betty Ann DeBuhr was born November 9, 1925 in Waukon, the daughter of Luella Selberg. She was baptized at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Betty graduated from Waukon High School in 1943 and attended Waukon Junior College. Betty worked at Hale's Clothing Store in Waukon before she was married.

(Gertrude) Gretchen (Ferring) Sanchez

(Gertrude) Gretchen (Ferring) Sanchez, age 98, died peacefully at Thornton Manor in Lansing April 25, 2017. A Mass of Christian burial was held at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing Saturday, April 29 with Monsignor Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery with military honors.

Gretch was born to Nick and Rose Gertrude (Doehler) Ferring in Center township, rural Lansing. She attended country school for seven years and then Immaculate Conception school, graduating in 1936.  She worked in Milwaukee, WI and Racine, WI before joining the Women’s Army Air Corps. During WWII she was stationed in Goose Bay Labrador, where she did decoding.

Leona Bullerman

Leona Bullerman, age 90, of Calmar died peacefully with her family by her side Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the Ossian Senior Hospice. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, April 19 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar with Rev. Robert Gross officiating. Interment was at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Calmar.

Leona (Winter) Bullerman was born February 6, 1927, the daughter of John and Philomena “Minnie” (Hackman) Winter, on the family farm in St. Lucas. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas.  Leona attended St. Luke’s Catholic School and graduated valedictorian of her class in 1945.

Earl Waters

Earl F. Waters, 86, of Waukon died Sunday, April 23, 2017 at his home. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, April 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3:30 p.m. scripture service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Iris Waters.

Earl Francis Waters was born March 9, 1931 in rural Dorchester, the son of George and Veronica (Schwartzhoff) Waters. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Hanover Catholic Church in rural Waukon and attended country schools and Waukon High School. Earl served in the U.S Navy from 1951-1954 during the Korean War.

Beverly Meiners

Beverly M. Meiners, 88, of Caledonia, MN passed away Friday, April 21, 2017 at Gundersen Tweeten Care Center in Spring Grove, MN. Funeral services were Tuesday, April 25 at St. Luke’s Church in Eitzen, MN with Rev. Michael McCann officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Beverly was born March 6, 1929 in Newport, KY to Emerson and Marie (Klein) Burkhardt. After graduating from high school in Newport, KY, she attended and graduated from Schauffler College of Religious Education and Social Work in Cleveland, OH. Beverly was one of the first women to start the Vacation Bible School Program at St. Luke’s Church in Eitzen, MN. It was during this time she met Berdell Meiners.

David G. Reisner, age 63, of White Bear Lake, MN, formerly of Waukon, died September 18, 2016. A graveside service will be held this Saturday, April 29 at 10 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Ft. Atkinson. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling burial arrangements.

Janice Karen (Piper) DeGowin

Janice Karen (Piper) DeGowin, age 80, died in her sleep Monday, March 13, 2017. She was in Hospice Care at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City after coping with cancer for a year.

Please join her husband, Richard; her son, Bill, and his wife, Carrie, and Karen's grandchildren, Thomas and Emily; and Karen’s  brother, Mark, and his wife, Cheryl, in services celebrating Karen’s life to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29 in the Spring Street Community Room of Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to contribute to Karen’s memory may send donations to the University of Iowa Volunteer Services, in care of the University of Iowa Foundation.
