Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $45 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $15 (additonal photos are also $15). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5") will also incur an additional charge of $11/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. Edgar Brainard

Edgar M. Brainard, 81, of Waukon died Friday, June 3, 2016 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 7 at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville, with Rev. Gary Catterson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery in rural Postville.

Edgar Maurice Brainard was born April 20, 1935, the son of George and Eva (Smith) Brainard in Postville. He was baptized and confirmed at Postville Presbyterian Church in Postville and attended Evergreen Country School and graduated from Postville High School in 1953. Edgar served with the National Guard in Oelwein, Company D 133 Infantry, for six years.

January 27, 1957, he married Shirley Ann Stock at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville. They lived near Postville and in 1958 they moved to Shirley's parents' farm in Ludlow Township which is a Century Farm.

Mary Peters

Mary Ann Peters, 76, was welcomed into God’s heavenly home June 1, 2016 at her home in Lansing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, with Rev. John Moser as the Celebrant. There will be a one-hour visitation before Mass time at the church Saturday. Inurnment will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing.

Elsie Weymiller

Elsie E. Weymiller, 98, of New Albin passed away Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Thornton Manor Nursing Center, Lansing. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4 at St. Peter’s Christian Community Church, located at 337 First Street SE in New Albin. Pastor William Reese will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Memorial Cemetery, New Albin. A visitation will take place from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the New Albin Community Center and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church.

Helen Kelley

Helen M. Kelley, age 81, of Faribault, MN passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016 at the St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault, MN following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, May 27 at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Faribault, MN. Interment was held at the St. Lawrence Cemetery, Faribault, MN. The family prefers that memorials be directed to IRIS, Infants Remembered In Silence, in memory of Helen.

Helen Marguerite, the daughter of Emmet and Irene (Bresenahan) Dougherty, was born November 7, 1934 in Harpers Ferry. She attended St. Patrick’s High School in Waukon and graduated with the Class of 1952.

November 12, 1957 she was united in marriage to Mark Francis Kelley at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon. Helen worked as a computer operator at an accountant’s office and later worked for 15 years in the accounting office for KGP Logistics. Mark preceded her in death September 20, 2009.

Robert Schmitt

Robert Daniel "Bob" Schmitt, 79, of Harpers Ferry died of melanoma May 4, 2016. A Celebration of Life will be taking place at the Community Center in Harpers Ferry Friday, June 10 from 2-5 p.m.

Robert was born August 11, 1936 at home in Little Turkey to Joseph and Christina (Kunt) Schmitt, one of 12 children. Bob attended Mount Carmel Catholic School and Lawler High School before moving to Cresco and graduating from Notre Dame Catholic High School in 1954. He served in the Marines from 1955-1959.

January 31, 1959, he married Mildred Zobeck, and they had one son, Gary; they later divorced. September 1, 1989, Bob married Wendy Allen, originally of Norwich, England. He worked at John Deere in Waterloo for 35 years. Shortly after his retirement in 1989, the couple moved to Harpers Ferry.

Mabel Stahl

Mabel Stahl, 69, of Lansing died Monday, August 10, 2015 at Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse, WI. There will be a celebration of life held this Saturday, June 4. A burial ceremony will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing at 1 p.m. A Celebration of Life luncheon will be held at Milty's in Lansing.

Mabel was born in Waukon October 27, 1945, the daughter of Charles and Geraldine Rouster. She attended school in Lansing and was a graduate of Kee High School.

Mabel married Allen Stahl and lived and raised her family in Lansing. She worked as a secretary, florist/clerk, and she was City Librarian at the Meehan Memorial Lansing Public Library. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mabel enjoyed spending her time with family, quilting, crocheting, crafts, canning, horseback riding and card club.

Bruce Kuehn

Bruce L. Kuehn, 52, a native of New Hampton, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2016. Per Bruce’s final wishes, no funeral or memorial service is planned.

Bruce Lee Kuehn was born in New Hampton September 6, 1962. He was the youngest child of Clarence John and Arlene Madeline (Boehmer) Kuehn. Bruce graduated from New Hampton High School in 1980. He received his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Tool and Die Making at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo in 1993. He was a dedicated employee at the TriMark Corporation in New Hampton for over 30 years.

Bruce was no ordinary man. He was a unique and caring individual who touched the lives of all who knew him. The most generous person to everyone he met, when someone asked for his help, he would never turn them down. The kind of man who ordered pizza and baked chocolate chip cookies for his sister and her children whenever they drove four hours to visit him.

Thelma Reetz

Thelma A. Kolsrud Reetz, 92, of Waukon died Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services were held Wednesday, May 18 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date at the church cemetery.

Thelma Andrea Normann Kolsrud Reetz was born July 15, 1923 in Waukon to Birger and Ethel (Gilbertson) Normann. Following graduation from Waukon High School in the spring of 1941, Thelma went to Washington, D.C. where she worked for the FBI. She was there from November 1941 to May 1946, when she returned to Iowa. She and Alton Kolsrud were married in February 1948 and farmed in the Elon area until Alton’s death in October 1979. Thelma and Ronald Reetz of Dubuque were married in August 1985. They lived in Waukon. Ronald died in September 2003.

Warren Goeke

Warren C.  Goeke, 58, of Santa Monica, CA died Friday, May 13, 2016 in Los Angeles, CA following a brief illness. The family is planning a private gathering to celebrate Warren’s life.

Warren Craig Goeke was born January 28, 1958 in Decorah, the son of Wesley Samuel and Ruth Carole Goeke. He attended St John’s Lutheran Church and graduated from Waukon High School in 1976. From there he went on to Iowa State University in Ames and majored in Civil Engineering. Following his college graduation in 1980, he moved to Santa Monica, CA, where he worked at various engineering jobs until starting his own consulting business.

Warren enjoyed watching sports and following current events. Much of his time was devoted to raising his daughter following the death of her mother, Adelene.

Clyde Kolsrud

Clyde Curtis Kolsrud, age 86, of Mesa, AZ passed away April 1, 2016. A memorial service was held Saturday, May 21 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ.

Clyde as born in Waterville in 1929 and moved his family to Mesa, AZ in 1962. He was in the construction field his entire life, until his retirement. He was an avid hunter, loved fishing, camping and was a sports enthusiast. He truly loved his Arizona teams, both college and professional. He also had a special place in his heart for his Iowa Hawkeyes. He was one that loved getting together with family and friends, he will be dearly missed by everyone.
