Photos may be included for an additional charge of $15 (additonal photos are also $15). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5") will also incur an additional charge of $11/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. Barbara Schon

Barbara J. Schon, 86, of Waukon died Friday, August 7, 2015 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Thursday, August 13 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Waukon, with Rev. Duane Smith officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
Barbara Jean Schon was born February 6, 1929 in Ottumwa, the daughter of Emory Howard and Valeta Elaine (Eaton) Sample. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines in 1948. July 27, 1948, Barbara married Donald Nelson Schon in Hedrick.

John Boardman

John O. Boardman, 101, of Monona died Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, August 10 at Rossville Presbyterian Church in Rossville, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial was at IOOF Cemetery, Rossville.
John Orlo Boardman was born July 22, 1914 in Waukon Junction, rural Harpers Ferry, the son of Orlo and Almeda (Chapin) Boardman. He attended Egan Country School in Linton Township through eighth grade and graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1932.
February 23, 1935, he married Almeda Rachel LeHew at the Presbyterian Church parsonage in Waukon. They farmed together in Paint Creek and Linton Townships where they raised dairy cows, pigs, chickens and crops. John resided in Monona for the last 40-plus years.
John was a member of Rossville Presbyterian Church and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed playing cards, softball and baseball, and was an avid coon hunter.

Mary Lewis

Mary Lewis, 92, of Caledonia, MN died peacefully Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, August 10 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Caledonia, MN, with Father Matt Fasnacht officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia, MN.
Mary was born April 6, 1923 in Caledonia, MN to James and Lena (Schobert) Carroll. Mary graduated  from Loretto High School in Caledonia, MN and June 21, 1945 she married Bob Lewis. Bob preceded her in death November 26, 1992.
Mary worked with Bob, side-by-side on their farm, where they raised their family. She was a 4-H leader, and a member of the Homemakers Group and Circle A Saddle Club. Having lost her son, Roger, in the Vietnam War, she was a Gold Star Parent and also a member of the Caledonia American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling with Bob and enjoyed playing cards. She was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Council of Catholic Women.

Patrecia Palmer

Patrecia A. Palmer, 77, of rural Monona died Sunday, August 2, 2015 at her home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 6 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Pastor Steve Oden officiating. Burial will be at IOOF Cemetery, Rossville. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, August 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.
Patrecia Anne Palmer was born March 24, 1938 in Tulsa, OK, the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Barnes) Collins. She was baptized and confirmed at Nogalas Avenue Baptist Church and graduated from Central High School in Tulsa. After graduating, Patrecia worked as a secretary for Phillips Petroleum until she got married.

Cletus Rooney

Cletus G. Rooney, 87, of Waukon died Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, August 3 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes, Fr. Donald Hawes, Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg and Deacon Mike Ward officiating. Burial was at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Cemetery, Waukon.
Cletus Gregory Rooney was born May 3, 1928 on the Waukon area farm of his parents, James J. and Margaret A. (McGeough) Rooney. He attended Jefferson Township #1 rural school and Waukon High School. January 15, 1949 he married Jeanne Frances Welch at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church.

Palma Mildred Quanrude Quandahl

Palma Mildred Quanrude Quandahl, age 96, of Andover, MN died July 30, 2015. Funeral services were held at Faith Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids, MN Monday, August 3. Interment was at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines Wednesday, August 5.
Palma was born in Allamakee County July 19, 1919 to Agnes and Henry Quanrude. She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Big Canoe Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. Palma graduated from Waukon High School and Waukon Junior College, and took classes at Luther College in Decorah.  She taught rural school in Allamakee and Winneshiek Counties for five years, after which she worked as a secretary in the Social Welfare Office in Waukon. She also served as secretary to State Senator Arthur Jacobson in Des Moines.

Irma Ashbacher

Irma M. Ashbacher, 100, of Caledonia, MN passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Caledonia Care and Rehab. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 1 at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Eitzen, MN, with Pastor Michael McCann officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Irma was born June 10, 1915 in Union City Township in Allamakee County to Henry and Caroline (Koenig) Beneke and grew up in Sleepy Hollow. March 4, 1935, Irma married Milton Ashbacher at the Wheatland Church, Union City Township, Allamakee County. She was employed as a nurse’s aide and worked at the hospitals in both Waukon and Caledonia.
Irma and Milton farmed in Union City Township for many years. He preceded her in death December 21, 1965. Irma enjoyed flowers and gardening.

James Byrnes

James “Jim” Edward Byrnes, 70, of Waukon died Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at his home from complications of cancer. Funeral Services were held Friday, July 31 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Lansing, with Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg as the Officiant. Burial followed at Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing with Military Honors.
Jim was born October 31, 1944 to Cyril and Lucille (Mauss) Byrnes in Hanover. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Lansing.
Jim joined the Army in 1966. He was part of the Big Red 1 Infantry and fought with them in the Vietnam War. After the war he moved back to Iowa, where he married Kathleen Schnuelle October 31, 1969. They later divorced in 1977.

Wendy Northcutt

Wendy L. (Kruger) Northcutt, 61, passed away peacefully July 18, 2015 at her home in Cle Elum, WA following a lengthy illness. Wendy was a member of the Church of the Resurrection (Episcopal) in Rosyln, WA, where a memorial celebration of life service was held Saturday, July 25.
Wendy was born July 2, 1954 to Benjamin and Joan (Helming) Kruger in Waukon. She married Gregory A. Northcutt in Waukon December 10, 1977, and he survives. She was preceded in death by her parents. Also surviving are her brothers, Ken of DeWitt and Dave of Waukon, as well as five nieces and two nephews.

Ethel Easton

Ethel M. Easton, 89, of Waukon died Friday, July 24, 2015 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 28 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Pastor Josh Miller officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Ethel Marie Easton was born September 13, 1925 in Lansing, the daughter of Theodore Henry and Mayme Elizabeth (Waters) Haerer. She was baptized and confirmed in Lansing and attended Lansing area country schools, which she rode to on horseback.
September 9, 1943, Ethel married Milton Osro Russell in Lansing. The couple moved to Waukon and Ethel spent many years as a nurse’s aide, including 25 years at Good Samaritan Center and five years at Makee Manor. Milton died in 1961, and October 6, 1962, Ethel married Edward LeRoy “Tuck” Easton at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Tuck died in 1993.
