The Waukon girls track team got its 2016 season underway at the Northeast Iowa Conference Indoor Meet hosted by Luther College in Decorah Tuesday, March 22. No team scores were kept, but the Indians were able to post several high-end finishes, including five event results within the top three.
The Indians were next scheduled to compete at Sumner-Fredericksburg Tuesday, March 29 before then having a week to prepare for the Charles City Invitational taking place Tuesday, April 5.

Kee girls basketball sophomore Ashley Schwartzhoff was honored by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and Iowa Basketball Coaches Association for her efforts on the basketball court during the 2015-2016 season. Schwartzhoff was named to the Class 1A All-District Team for the Northeast District and was also named to the Class 1A All-State Third Team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, as well as to the Class 1A All-Region Team by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. She led the Hawks with 293 points, 41 made three-point field goals, 88 steals and 81 assists during this historic, 22-3 season during which Kee posted a school record number of wins and qualified for the State Tournament for the first time in program history.

The 2016 season got underway for the Waukon boys track team at the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Indoor Meet at Luther College in Decorah Tuesday, March 22. No team scores were kept at the meet, but the Indians recorded a handful of medal-winning finishes with five top-three placewinnings.
The Indians were next scheduled to compete at Sumner-Fredericksburg Tuesday, March 29 before hosting their own Early Bird Invitational Thursday, March 31, details of which are printed in a shaded box. Waukon will then compete at Decorah Monday, April 4 and then at Postville Thursday, April 7.

The Lady Hawks are next scheduled to take their efforts outdoors for the first time this season, being scheduled to compete at the Postville Invitational Tuesday, April 5 before taking part in the Starmont Invitational Thursday, April 7.

The Kee boys track team opened its 2016 season at the Upper Iowa Conference Indoor Meet hosted by Luther College in Decorah Monday, March 21. No team scores were recorded at the meet, but the Hawks did record a trio of top-three event finishes to highlight their efforts.
The Kee track boys are next scheduled to take their efforts outdoors for the first time this season, hoping to compete this Thursday, March 31 at Waukon. The Hawks are then scheduled to compete at Edgewood-Colesburg Tuesday, April 5 and at the Postville Invitational Thursday, April 7.

The Waukon girls track team returns both quantity and quality when it comes to varsity letterwinning experience heading into the 2016 season. Within a field of 17 returning varsity letterwinners from last spring, the Indians will benefit from the experience of five competitors who qualified for last season’s State Track Meet to help pace this season’s group of 38 young ladies who have reported for early-season duty.
“I feel that we have a very strong core group of runners returning from last year and we have a number of new participants that I feel will be able to make an immediate impact,” second-year Waukon girls track coach Bob Wasson said. “I am looking forward to getting on the track and seeing how we compare with other area schools.”

The Kee girls track team will feature just short of half of this season’s crew returning with varsity letterwinning experience from last season. Seven veterans from last spring will be joined by some promising first-year competitors and others returning to the program after a brief absence to make up this season’s squad currently consisting of 15 total competitors.
Within that veteran crew of seven are juniors Sierra Schobert and Sydney Strong, along with sophomores Kendra Cooper, Annabelle Dibert, Ashley Schwartzhoff, Chloe Severson and Nicki Wood. “I look for great leadership from those seven,” Kee girls track coach Chad Winters said. “They know what is expected at practice and at meets.  I expect that they will show the newcomers how to work hard.”

A strong collection of 17 returning letterwinners within 51 total competitors will bolster the efforts of the 2016 Waukon boys track team this spring. Within that collection of returning veteran talent lies a good balance of contributions to nearly every facet of track and field, although that overall balance of experience doesn’t lend itself to much depth in any one facet, according to Waukon boys track and field helmsman Ted Snitker.
“I think we have some strength in all of our areas, as we have multiple letterwinners back all over our squad,” Coach Snitker explained. “Our weakness, especially early, might be depth.”

The Kee boys track team continues its recent growth, with 17 young men reporting to duty for fourth-year head coach Nick Mooney this spring, a small handful more than a year ago. Of even greater impact, however, is the growth experienced by this season’s club in the number of experienced returnees, up considerably from last season’s lone returnee.
While last season’s lone returning veteran has since graduated, an increase in quality also comes along with this season’s increase in quantity of returning experience. Junior Danny Brennan leads that newfound veteran charge, not only bringing back varsity experience but State Meet familiarity as a double qualifier last season in both the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run.
