The Allamakee Community School District hosted its annual Employee Recognition event Tuesday, May 29 at the Waukon Middle School gymnasium for all employees of the school district. The event featured the honoring of school district employees who have achieved milestone tenures of 15, 20, 25, 35, 40 and 45 years of service to the school district, as well as 12 staff members who are retiring from the school district, including Allamakee Community School District Superintendent Dave Herold. Waukon High School 2018 graduates Laurel Keenan and Nathan Smith have been awarded the F. William Beckwith Scholarship through the Iowa Grocers Education Foundation for the 2018-2019 academic year. The two were each chosen for the $2,000 scholarship from an applicant pool of more than 360 students.
IGEF scholarships are awarded based on academic merit to young adults who work for an Iowa Grocery Industry Association member company (either full-time or part-time) or to sons and daughters of full-time employees whose firms are members of the Iowa Grocery Industry Association, a state trade association that represents the food industry, including chain and independent supermarkets, convenience stores, suppliers, wholesalers, brokers, manufacturers and distributors.
Katelyn Leiran (center), Waukon High School graduating senior and daughter of Steve and Nancy Leiran of Waterville, was recognized by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds (right) and Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg (left) for outstanding academic achievement at the 16th Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony held April 29 at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines. The statewide program, sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s Office, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF), honored 430 high school seniors from throughout Iowa at this year's ceremony. “Iowa Farm Bureau members know that by investing in our youth and communities, we’re investing in the future of Iowa,” said IFBF President Craig Hill. “We have been honored to be a title sponsor of the Annual Governor's Scholar Recognition Ceremony for the past 16 years to celebrate Iowa's exceptional high school students.
Chautauqua is defined as an experience that provides popular education and entertainment. The Ferryville Tourism Council will be presenting a Chautauqua Summer Series for 2018. Each event will be held at the Ferryville Village Hall at the south end of town beginning at 8 p.m. with refreshments and time for visiting.
The first program of the series will be Wednesday, June 20 at 8 p.m. Barbara Kailean Welsh will be the featured guest. She grew up just outside of Lansing, and she now lives in Viroqua, WI. She is the author of a biography of Harriet Hosmer, a woman whose name is forever connected to the Lansing area.
Harriet Hosmer never lived in Lansing, and in fact, only visited once for a short time. So why, one might wonder, is one of the most famous landmarks in Lansing named Mount Hosmer? Those who come to the June 20 Chautauqua program in Ferryville, WI will find out.
Friday, June 22 - the day after summer solstice, the public is invited to hear Carl Bracken give the talk “Reasons for Seasons and Summer Skies” at Meehan Memorial Lansing Public Library, located at 515 Main Street in Lansing. He’ll explain why planet Earth enjoys four distinct astronomical and climatologist seasons, helping listeners better understand the night skies.
Telescopes will be available for viewing the stars. This is a program for kids and adults. Bracken is a member of the Cedar Amateur Astronomers (CAA) in Cedar Rapids, whose mission is to share its members’ passion for observing, studying and imaging the cosmos.

The Kee baseball team played to an undefeated week to extend a current eight-game win streak, including a yet undefeated 6-0 start to the Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) season that currently has the Hawks at an 8-2 overall mark. This week’s unblemished schedule included a sweep of a pair of UIC opponents, including wins of 7-2 and 14-4 in five innings over Clayton Ridge/Central at home Monday, June 4 and by scores of 13-2 and 12-2 in five innings Thursday, June 7. The Hawks were also scheduled to play two games in the Charles City Tournament Saturday, June 9, but that tournament was first moved to St. Ansgar due to wet field conditions before being called off due to stormy weather. It is not anticipated to be rescheduled.

The Kee softball team played to an undefeated week in six games this past week, perhaps showing a renewed focus after suffering its first two losses of the season in back-to-back games against top-15 rated opponents to end the previous week of competition. That renewed focused showed itself in a couple different aspects, as the Lady Hawks got their Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) season off to an undefeated start by outscoring UIC opponents by a combined 68-0 in four games, including doubleheader sweeps of 14-0 and 29-0 at Postville Monday, June 4 and 12-0 and 13-0 at home over Clayton Ridge Wednesday, June 6.
In addition to Waukon boys track and field senior Abe Schwartz being a State Meet qualifier in the 4x200 for the Indians this season, he also showed an overall balance of athletics and academics by also earning Academic All-State honors from the Iowa Association of Track and Field Coaches. To earn such recognition, a senior track and field athlete must have achieved a 3.8 or higher grade point average (GPA) and a cumulative score of 28 or higher on the ACT, and be a participant in the Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet in at least one event during his or her year of application.
The Waukon baseball team posted a winning week on the field this week, winning two of three games played but remaining in search of its first Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) victory this season. The baseball Tribe opened the week with a 13-5 home triumph over Sumner-Fredericksburg Monday, June 4 before falling by a 4-0 count at Oelwein Tuesday, June 5 but bouncing back with a 6-5 victory at Turkey Valley Wednesday, June 6. A Friday, June 8 home doubleheader with Decorah was postponed by rainy weather until Tuesday, June 19.
The Waukon softball team put together its first win streak of the 2018 season in winning two of three games played this past week to currently hold a 4-9 overall record that includes a mark of 2-5 in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play. The Indians scored back-to-back NEIC wins, 9-6 Monday, June 4 at Decorah and 10-2 at home over Oelwein Wednesday, June 6, before having that streak ended by a 7-4 loss at New Hampton Thursday, June 7. The softball Tribe was also supposed to play in the Riceville Tournament Saturday, June 9 but that event was canceled due to stormy weather.
