Kee boys basketball team falls at intra-county foe Postville, 62-37

In its only competition of the week, the Kee boys basketball team stayed within its own county and conference, but also stayed within its own recent trend of game results with a 62-37 loss at Postville Friday, January 26. A strong first half effort that left the Hawks nearly even with the host Pirates at the halftime break gave way to double-digit margins in each of the game’s latter two frames to allow Postville to pull away to its decisive final edge.

DNR hosts meeting regarding local CWD surveillance efforts … Nearly 60 area individuals attended the Thursday, January 18 meeting hosted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to discuss local efforts to monitor chronic wasting disease (CWD). The meeting was directed by Iowa DNR Wildlife Biologist Terry Haindfield, who explained what CWD is, its impact and the more concentrated local efforts to curb the emergence of the disease in both Allamakee and Clayton counties, including a special harvest and collection effort taking place this week in an area that has been expanded even further (see accompanying map at right) since Thursday's meeting due to one newly confirmed case and five other suspected cases in Allamakee County currently undergoing their second confirmation testing since the meeting. Area for special CWD effort expanded ... Since its Thursday, January 18 meetings held in Allamakee County and in Clayton County, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has expanded the surveillance zone in Allamakee County for the current special tissue collection effort going on now until this Sunday, January 28. IPERS, CAFOs among items discussed at first legislative forum of 2018 held in Waukon

by Lissa Blake

More than 30 people attended a legislative forum Saturday, January 20 hosted by Iowa Senator Michael Breitbach of Strawberry Point and State Representatives Kristi Hager (District 56) of Waukon and Mike Bergan (District 55) of Dorchester. Each of the three legislators - all of whom are Republican - gave a short introduction explaining their recent work in Des Moines.

Hager said she is working on a bill which would allow State departments to save up to 10 percent of their general funds, as long as the budget is growing every year. She also has been working on a bill that would allow the public to purchase property owned by the State that has been vacant for over five years. If someone is currently leasing the property, they would have the first chance to buy it.
