The public is invited to attend the Grand March, which is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening to the public at 7:45 p.m. and a free-will donation being taken. Following the Grand March, this year’s Prom King and Queen will be crowned. Post Prom festivities will follow the dance until 4 a.m. at the former Lansing Middle School gymnasium.

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst visited Mosaic's Waukon office Tuesday, April 11 as part of her 99-county tour following a town hall meeting in Elkader April 10. Ernst met with the administration and staff at Mosaic, an organization that serves individuals with developmental disabilities, to discuss the organization's positive impact, advocacy, current needs and concerns relating to legislation.

Thornton Manor, located in Lansing, will be celebrating a big milestone for the facility this month - 40 years of service to Lansing and the surrounding area. An open house will be held at Thornton Manor this Sunday, April 23 from 2-4 p.m. in honor of the 40th anniversary.
Thornton Manor accepted its first resident April 21, 1977 and has continued to change and grow to meet the needs of the community since that time. The original facility was named for Dr. John Thornton, a well-known physician in the Lansing area.
Administrator Sam Kuhn noted that the nursing home has always been licensed for 60 beds. In 2003, the Thornton Heights Assisted Living apartments and the Thornton Manor Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic were added to the facility. "It was a great way for us to expand our services to keep pace with growing trends," Kuhn said.
The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, April 17 to address a full agenda of items, including setting a letting date for pavement rehabilitation on the Great River Road X52, a Fiscal-Year 2018 health insurance update and the consideration of vacating some excess right of way along Lycurgus Road X20. There were no public comments.
A Quarterly Report for the Allamakee County Relief Office was accepted and placed on file. Allamakee County Auditor Denise Beyer and the Supervisors discussed possible dates for the final meeting of Fiscal-Year 2017 with the approval of June 30 at 9 a.m. as the final meeting time. Beyer and the Supervisors also discussed possible dates and times for the Public Hearing for the Fiscal-Year 2017 budget amendment with May 15 at 9:40 a.m. being approved.
With Memorial Day approaching, the Allamakee County Veterans Memorial Committee would like to remind those interested that orders for individual memorial bricks are still being taken for placement within the Allamakee County Veterans Memorial at the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon. To date, there are 1,431 bricks in place bearing the names of 1,652 Allamakee County Veterans.
This year, those interested in ordering a memorial brick should place their order no later than May 1. Every effort will be made to have the bricks ordered by that date in place by Memorial Day this year. If possible, orders received after May 1 will be placed prior to Memorial Day, but most likely will be put in place at a later date.

The Waukon City Council met for a special session Tuesday, April 11 to discuss several items, including street repairs and sidewalks, the review of water rates and the review of Water Department employment applications. In Mayor Duane DeWalle's absence, Mayor Pro-Tem Dwight Jones called the meeting to order.
The 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital is coming to Waukon High School this weekend, complete with Hawkeye, Duke, Colonel Blake, Klinger and Hot Lips Houlihan. The stage production of this popular TV series will be presented Saturday, April 22 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 23 at 2 p.m. in the Waukon High School auditorium. The play is written in accordance to the original movie of M*A*S*H, but it has many of the familiar characters seen on reruns of the popular TV show. A mere four points separated the Waukon High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter from winning a third consecutive Chapter of the Year State Championship at the annual FBLA State Leadership Conference (SLC) held April 6-8 in Coralville. Despite bringing home double-digit totals each of contest championship and runner-up results, along with numerous other top-five placewinnings, the Waukon chapter was edged out of its Chapter of the Year "three-peat" by a Western Dubuque chapter that featured 25 more students in attendance than what the Waukon High School chapter involved.
Waukon Middle School was awarded the CenturyLink Teachers and Technology Grant in the amount of $4,910 for an Interactive Touch Screen Display for the Waukon High School/Middle School Library. The grant was written by PreK-12 District Teacher Librarian Lisa Snitker. The interactive display will be used in the library makerspace where students can collaborate on the panel with 20 touch points and up to 10 users creating digital projects. A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials. The interactive display will add resources available to students that will help guide their inquiry and exploration in learning through digital tools. The CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation's Teachers and Technology grants are designed to help fund projects that advance student success through the innovative use of technology.
Waukon Trees Forever was recently honored as an Outstanding Community Organization by the Iowa Urban Tree Council. The award presentation was made Thursday, April 6 at the 27th Annual Urban Forestry Awards Luncheon in Des Moines. Waukon Trees Forever will hold its annual spring planting Saturday, April 29. Volunteers are asked to gather at the large parking lot at the Wellness Center at 9 a.m. Plans call for planting about 80 trees at several sites around the city. A shovel and work gloves are about the only tools needed. Work will consist of planting trees and mulching them. Everyone is invited to help with the project.
