Northgate Care Center to begin local "Acts of Kindness" program

February 1, Northgate Care Center and ABCM Healthy Living Home Care of Waukon, owned and operated by ABCM Corporation of Hampton, will kick off its own Acts of Kindness program in an effort to promote good will and inspire/encourage acts of kindness to pass on throughout the community.

Waukon Chamber of Commerce seeking nominations for variety of honors to be awarded at February 22 annual meeting

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations from community residents for a variety of new awards to be bestowed at the Chamber's annual meeting scheduled for February 22 this year at the Waukon Banquet Center. In addition to the traditional Person of the Year honoring awarded each year, the Chamber will also bestow awards this year for Years of Service, New Business of the Year, Business of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

"Frac Sand Land" video to be featured at this weekend's Oneota Film Festival

New Albin resident Robert Nehman, vice president of the Allamakee County Protectors citizens group, has produced a video called “Frac Sand Land” that has been chosen for inclusion in the annual Oneota Film Festival taking place on the Luther College campus in Decorah this weekend. The film deals with the inherent problems around the frac sand mining industry and features interviews with people who have been directly affected by the sand mines located near their homes.

Waukon Power Sports to offer snowmobile safety course

Waukon Power Sports will be offering a snowmobile safety course for students ages 12-7 Saturday, January 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is mandatory for those who wish to operate unsupervised on public property or areas purchased with snowmobile registration funds.
The course will be led by Jake Ludeking, a certified Snowmobile Safety Course instructor. The course will be held at Waukon Power Sports, 208 Hwy. 9 SW, Waukon.

Snowshoe rentals made available by Allamakee County Conservation Board

The Allamakee County Conservation Board has recently partnered with the Waukon Wellness Center and the Main Street Lansing Office to make snowshoes available for rent to the public. The Allamakee County Conservation Board purchased thirty pairs of snowshoes for promoting healthy outdoor winter activity and conducting programs in area schools. These initial snowshoes were used in area schools during the week and made available to the public for rent on the weekends.

Robey Memorial Library representatives meet with Vision Iowa Board regarding grant application

Volunteers working on the Robey Memorial Library Expansion Project and Capital Campaign visited with the Vision Iowa Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Board recently. Library campaign volunteers had submitted a Vision Iowa CAT grant application and this was their first meeting with Vision Iowa Board members.

Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank donates $75,000 to Robey Memorial Library expansion project

Nancy Schoh of Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank recently presented Robey Memorial Library Foundation President and Capital Campaign Co-Chair Dr. Kenneth Olson with a check in the amount of $75,000 to assist in the expansion and renovation of the library. The Robey Memorial Library Foundation (401 1st Ave. NW, Waukon) is still accepting donations to the project, which is expected to get underway as soon as weather permits.
