Bus trip to Des Moines January 23 for Veterans Day on the Hill

Area veterans organizations will be sponsoring a bus trip to the State Capitol building in Des Moines for the annual Veterans Day on the Hill Wednesday, January 23. The bus will make its initial departure from the ball diamond parking area in downtown Lansing at 5:30 a.m., making stops along the way for pick-up and scheduled departure times of 5:55 a.m. from behind the Vet's Club in Waukon, 6:15 a.m. from the VFW Post Home in Decorah, 6:40 a.m. from Kwik Star in Calmar, 7 a.m. from Hardee's in West Union, 7:20 a.m. from Kwik Star in Oelwein, and 7:40 a.m. from the VFW Post in Independence.

Applications for Allamakee County Community Foundation grant funding due by January 31

Grant applications to the Allamakee County Community Foundation (ACCF) must be submitted by January 31. Non-profit organizations can apply for grants from the ACCF for projects or programs that address significant community issues and benefit a broad spectrum of the community. Projects must be in Allamakee County and the maximum grant awarded will be $20,000.

Friday fog and ice not a good combination

Although milder temperatures make the winter season more bearable in some cases, they can also lead to situations that spelled trouble for area residents this past Friday, January 11. Daytime temperatures that edged toward 40 degrees and some rare January rainfall in the area prior to last Friday allowed a great deal of snow cover to melt away, but when temperatures overnight fell below freezing, some of those melted areas froze again to sheer ice.

Tri-State Thunder Vets to discuss monthly services for Vets

Tri-state Thunder Vets, a Thunder Rode service of Veterans assisting Veterans, will be holding a meeting at the VFW in Decorah Saturday, January 19 at 5 p.m. to discuss adding monthly local services for Veterans. Anyone who is interested in either volunteering or participating is welcome to attend. Food and drinks will be provided.

Waukon police officer stabbed with screwdriver

Saturday, January 5 at around 11:45 p.m., the Waukon Police Department responded to a report of an assault in progress at 11 Lyle Drive in Waukon. Upon entering the residence, Waukon Police Officer Chad Dugan was reportedly stabbed with a screwdriver by Raymond R. Nelson of Waukon, age 60. Nelson was taken into custody after a struggle with officers. Dugan was treated and released for minor injuries at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

Three seriously injured in head-on collision near Sunshine Hill

The Iowa State Patrol reported that three people were seriously injured in a head-on collision Friday, January 4 at around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 76 and Sunshine Hill. Marilyn Martie of Waukon, age 73, was reportedly traveling north on Highway 76 when she lost control of her vehicle, which crossed the center line and collided with a southbound vehicle driven by George Jambois of Genoa, WI, age 86. Jambois and his passenger, Shirley Jambois of Genoa, WI, age 80, were transported by ambulance to Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors' first meeting of 2013 was held Wednesday, January 2 due to the New Year's holiday. The Board resumed its regular Monday meeting time Monday, January 7.

Landon Steven David Wilkes is First Baby born in 2013 at VMH

Veterans Memorial Hospital physicians and staff have announced that Landon Steven David Wilkes, son of Steven and Natasha Wilkes of Waukon, is the winner of the First Baby of the Year Contest at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
Landon was born January 2 at 6:52 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital. Dr. David Schwartz was his physician.  Landon weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 21 1/2 inches in length when he arrived. He joins two older sisters at home, Brooklyn, age 4 and Lillianna, 10 months.
