Harpers Ferry Fireflies finish as State Tournament Runner-Up ...

The Harpers Ferry Fireflies traveled to West Des Moines Saturday and Sunday, June 10-11 for the Granny Basketball State Tournament. The Fireflies won five of six games they played in the tournament, with their lone loss coming in the championship game to make the Fireflies this year’s State Tournament Runner-Up.

Waukon baseball team’s five wins in six games include home sweep of Crestwood, wins at Dubuque Senior and Osage, split with Waverly-SR


Record-breaking rip ... Waukon baseball senior catcher Carter Schellsmidt crushes a two-out pitch to right center field for a two-run double in the second inning of the Indians’ 4-1 second-game victory in a home doubleheader split with Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, June 16. Schellsmidt’s double not only gave the Indians a 3-0 lead they would never look back from in the 4-1 win, but also broke the Waukon baseball all-time career hits record, surpassing the previous standard of 140 hits hammered out by 1996 Waukon High School graduate Brian Curtin, who went on to play baseball at Iowa State University and a couple seasons for the Class A affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians (now Guardians). Senior Carter Schellsmidt breaks career hit record more than a quarter century old

The Waukon baseball team was just a game away from an undefeated week, winning five of six games played this past week. The baseball Tribe opened the week with a home doubleheader sweep of Crestwood Monday, June 12 by scores of 16-6 in five innings and 11-4 before claiming a 7-2 win at Dubuque Senior Tuesday, June 13. The wins kept coming at Osage Thursday, June 15 with an 8-2 triumph, before the Indians split a home doubleheader with Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, June 16, falling in game one by a 9-1 result before bouncing back with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

Waukon softball team’s four wins in seven games include road sweep at Waverly-Shell Rock and seventh-place finish at W. Delaware Tournament

The Waukon softball team played through a busy week with better than average results of four wins in seven games. The softball Tribe opened the week with a doubleheader sweep at Waverly-Shell Rock Tuesday, June 13 with wins of 5-1 and 11-5 before being tripped up by a 6-5 result at Crestwood Wednesday, June 14. The Indians then played four games at the West Delaware Tournament, evenly splitting those games for the tournament and on each day of the event, including an 8-4 win over Dyersville Beckman followed by a 10-0 loss to Class 3A second rated Davenport Assumption in five innings Friday, June 16 and then another split Saturday, June 17 that included a 13-1 loss in four innings to Class 1A top-rated North Linn and a 7-2 win over Independence to finish in seventh place in the 16-team tournament.

Kee baseball team wins three of four games, undefeated week snatched away in bottom of final inning at Wapsie Valley, 2-1

The Kee baseball team played one of its lightest weekly schedules of the season this past week and came within a single run of making it an undefeated week of competition. The Hawks opened the week with a 9-6 win at Janesville Monday, June 12 before pulling out a 2-1 triumph at home against Turkey Valley Tuesday, June 13. Kee then brought home a 6-1 win from MFL/MarMac Thursday, June 15 before suffering its only loss of the week, a 2-1 loss in the bottom of the seventh inning at Wapsie Valley Friday, June 16.

Kee softball team’s even split of six games includes UIC home sweep of MFL/MarMac, single win at West Delaware Tournament

In a week heavy on each end but light in the middle, the Kee softball team won half of its six games played this past week. The Lady Hawks opened the week with a sweep of an Upper Iowa Conference doubleheader at MFL/MarMac Monday, June 12 by scores of 13-1 in four innings and 12-7. They then played four games at the two-day West Delaware Tournament this past weekend, falling in two games Friday, June 16 by scores of 12-3 to Class 4A fifth-rated Western Dubuque and 6-5 to Edgewood-Colesburg before splitting two games Saturday, June 17 with an 8-2 win over Class 5A Cedar Rapids Washington followed by a 5-0 loss to North Fayette Valley to finish in 14th place in the 16-team tournament.

The Kee baseball team hit the road for nearly all of its games this past week, putting four of the week’s seven games into the win column. Three of those wins came early in the week, as the Hawks swept an Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) doubleheader at Clayton Ridge by scores of 13-1 in six innings and 11-2 Monday, June 5 before winning at Nashua-Plainfield, 10-1, Tuesday, June 6. Kee battled Class 1A eighth-rated South Winneshiek to a 3-0 loss at home Thursday, June 8 before winning at Postville Friday, June 9, 16-0 in four innings, and dropping two games at the Cedar River Classic Saturday, June 10 in Charles City, 4-3 to St. Ansgar and 10-0 in five innings to the host Comets.

Seven games on just three different dates resulted in a trio of those contests being put in the win column for the Kee softball team this past week, as the Lady Hawks picked up a single win on each of those dates. A Monday, June 5 home doubleheader split with North Fayette Valley included a 7-4 win and a 13-2 loss in five innings before a similar split result was recorded at Turkey Valley Wednesday, June 7 with a 19-15 loss followed by a 12-6 victory. Kee’s diamond dwellers wrapped up the week with three games at the Riceville Tournament Saturday, June 10, falling to St. Ansgar, 6-3, and Hudson, 10-2, but also recording an 8-6 win over Class 2A 14th-rated Osage.

Currently holding a 5-10 season record that includes a 4-2 mark in Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) play, the softball Hawks were next scheduled to host MFL/MarMac for a varsity doubleheader Monday, June 12 before playing in the two-day West Delaware Tournament Friday and Saturday, June 16-17.

The Waukon softball team battled through a busy week that resulted in two of seven games being put in the win column. One of those victories came right away to open the week, a 15-5 triumph in five innings at Central Elkader Monday, June 5 before the Lady Indians came up a bit short in a home doubleheader with New Hampton Tuesday, June 6 by scores of 6-3 and 2-1. The softball Tribe wrapped up the week falling at home to Charles City, 7-2, Friday, June 9 and in two of three games at the Riceville Tournament Saturday, June 10, including losses of 13-0 to Class 2A 14th-rated Osage and 13-5 to Riceville, but picking up a 9-5 win over St. Ansgar.

Waukon baseball team plays to within just a few runs of an undefeated busy week with single-run losses at Crestwood and in split with #10 New Hampton

The Waukon baseball team played one of its busiest schedules of this season, playing seven games in a span of five nights and coming up just three runs shy of recording an undefeated week. Putting four of those seven games in the win column, the Indians opened the week with a doubleheader sweep at Turkey Valley Monday, June 5 by scores of 6-0 and 10-0 in six innings before being tripped up by single-run losses of 5-4 in each game of another road doubleheader at Crestwood Tuesday, June 6. The diamond Tribe returned to the win column with a 10-4 home victory over Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday, June 8 before playing to a split of another road doubleheader at Class 2A 10th-rated New Hampton Friday, June 9, allowing the first game to get away in the bottom of the seventh inning by just a 3-2 final margin before rallying back for a 3-1 win in the nightcap.

Waukon softball team just a few runs away from remaining undefeated, suffering 10-9 loss at Decorah in nine innings and splitting pair at NFV


Ends the threat, and the ballgame ... Waukon softball junior third baseman Olivia Bossom put a tag on this sliding Crestwood baserunner to end hopes of a late rally in the Indians’ final win of a doubleheader sweep of the Cadets at home Tuesday, May 30. In addition to making this final out of the night, Bossom also collected a double in three at-bats in each of the two games, scoring a run in each contest and driving in the game-tying run in the extra-inning game one. The Waukon softball team picked up its schedule pace this past week, but also picked up its first losses of this season, playing to a 4-2 record in six games played but being only four runs from remaining undefeated on the year. The Indians swept a pair of closer ballgames from Crestwood at home Tuesday, May 30 by scores of 5-4 in eight innings and 5-2 before suffering their first loss of the week, 10-9 in nine innings, at Decorah Thursday, June 1 but bouncing back with a 5-2 win at South Winneshiek Friday, June 2. The diamond Tribe wrapped up its week splitting its two games played at the North Fayette Valley Tournament Saturday, June 3, falling to Edgewood-Colesburg by a 6-3 result before defeating MFL/MarMac by a 10-5 final result.
