Jakob Regan has season ended with third-place District Tournament finish


Season ended with third-place District Tournament finish ... After falling by just a 2-0 decision on a late reversal in his opening-round match with Hampton-Dumont junior Jack Showalter, Regan defeated Powers by a 9-5 decision in this third-place match but was denied a wrestleback opportunity when Showalter was beaten in the championship match to claim second place and the final qualifying spot for the State Tournament, leaving Regan in third place and finishing his sophomore season with a 27-8 record. Waukon wrestling 120-pound sophomore Jakob Regan was looking to make a return trip to the State Wrestling Tournament when he competed in the Class 2A District 6 Tournament hosted by New Hampton High School Saturday, February 13.

However, that advancement to the season grand finale for a second consecutive season was denied for the lone Indian District Tournament qualifier by just two or three points in a couple different matches, as Regan finished third in the 120-pound weight class to have his season brought to a close, bringing the 2020-2021 Waukon wrestling season to full completion.

Kee girls basketball team wraps up regular season with 38-36 home loss, starts 1A Regional Tournament play with 58-38 triumph at 18-3 Riceville

The Kee girls basketball team wrapped up its regular season and got its postseason underway in opposite directions this past week, ultimately extending its season even further down the postseason road. The Lady Hawks began this past week with a 38-36 loss at home to East Buchanan Monday, February 8 to end their regular season with a loss but got their Class 1A Regional Tournament underway with a convincing win at Riceville, 58-38, Thursday, February 11 to keep their 2020-2021 campaign alive.

Waukon girls basketball team wraps up best NEIC season results in either side of a decade, continues late winning streak with first-round Regional Tournament win


20 for 20 ... The Waukon girls basketball team both wrapped up its regular season and began its postseason in victorious fashion this past week, starting up another win streak to end the regular season during the week and carrying it over into the start of postseason play over the weekend. The Lady Indians opened the week with a 64-35 win at Oelwein Monday, February 8 to wrap up their best Northeast Iowa Conference season in right around a decade before ending their regular season schedule with a 65-45 win at home over Jesup Tuesday, February 9 and then beginning postseason tournament play with a 72-43 triumph at home over Crestwood Saturday, February 13 in the opening round of Class 3A Regional play.

Kee boys basketball team wraps up regular season with sweep of two final opponents to post first winning UIC campaign in 10 years

The Kee boys basketball team wrapped up its regular season schedule this past week in sweeping fashion in more ways than one. The Hawks not only swept both their opponents this past week for an undefeated week heading into postseason play, but also completed a regular season sweep of West Central to finish with its first winning season in Upper Iowa Conference play in 10 years. The Kee boys opened the week pulling out a 67-63 home win over East Buchanan Monday, February 8 before closing out the regular season with a 74-68 win at West Central Tuesday, February 9.

That final sweeping week improved Kee’s season marks to 11-10 overall that included a 9-7 record in the Upper Iowa Conference (UIC), marking the first time since the 2010-2011 season that the Hawks posted a winning record in UIC play, that UIC season mark also being 9-7 for the Hawks that year. This season’s 9-7 campaign placed Kee in fifth place in the final nine-team UIC standings.

Waukon football has six seniors commit to playing at collegiate level


Sweeney to the University of Iowa ... The Hawks are a NCAA Division I program and belong to the Big Ten Conference. Sweeney said he was recruited as a preferred walk-on to the Hawkeye program as a defensive end or defensive lineman and he intends to pursue a major in Business and minor in Exercise Science. “It’s been my dream school growing up, watching Parker Hesse (2014 Waukon High School graduate) play there, and I’ve got a good friend, Asher Fahey (2020 Waukon High School graduate), who plays there now,” Sweeney said in relaying his choice to commit to Iowa. “Parker told me if it’s my dream school it might be a hard offer to pass up, and Asher said if an offer comes through I better jump on it and come join him down there. They both spoke highly of the program and their opportunities at Iowa.”

Krueger to Quincy University ... Waukon football senior Sawyer Krueger is pictured above with his parents, Kris and Sarah Krueger, as he signs his commitment to play football at Quincy University in Quincy, IL. The Hawks are a NCAA Division II program and belong to the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Krueger said he was recruited to play defensive line and he intends to pursue a major in Aviation. “They have a really great coaching staff and they really pursued me to come play for them,” Krueger said in relaying his choice to commit to the Quincy program.

Krambeer to Coe College ... Waukon football senior Konnor Krambeer is pictured above with his parents, Brad and Becky Krambeer, and his sister, Kaitlyn, as he signs his commitment to play football at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. The Kohawks are a NCAA Division III program and belong to the American Rivers Conference. Krambeer said he was recruited to play safety and he intends to pursue a major in Criminal Justice. “They have great coaches there, they are really supportive of their players. I liked the campus and facilities, it seemed like a really healthy environment and a great place to pursue my major,” Krambeer said in relaying his choice to commit to Coe.

Schwartz to Wisconsin Lutheran ... Waukon football senior Joe Schwartz is pictured above with his parents, Joan and Dave Schwartz, as he signs his commitment to play football at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, WI. The Warriors are a NCAA Division III program and belong to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Schwartz said he was recruited to play offensive line, most likely the center position he played for the Indians this past fall, and he intends to pursue a major in Marine Biology. “I really like their program and studying Marine Biology on Lake Michigan is very appealing to me,” Schwartz said in relaying his choice to commit to the Wisconsin Lutheran program.

O’Neill to Wartburg College ... Waukon football senior Ethan O’Neill is pictured above with his parents, Jenny and Cory O’Neill, and his brother, Evan, as he signs his commitment to play football at Wartburg College in Waverly. The Knights are a NCAA Division III program in the American Rivers Conference. O’Neill said he was recruited to play running back and he intends to pursue a major in Math Education with a minor in Coaching. “They have a great winning program there and they were really great to me when I visited there; they are very supportive of their players,” O’Neill said in relaying his choice to commit to the Wartburg program.

Hermeier to Wartburg College ... Waukon football senior Walker Hemeier is pictured above with his parents, Lee and Danette Hermeier, and his sister, Ella, as he signs his commitment to play football at Wartburg College in Waverly. The Knights are a NCAA Division III program and belong to the American Rivers Conference. Hermeier said he was recruited to play defensive end and he intends to pursue a major in Sports Medicine. “They have a great football program and a strong major in what I wanted to pursue,” Hermeier said in relaying his choice to commit to the Wartburg program.

The Waukon football program continued to experience the positive results of the success of its 2020 Class 2A State Championship season as six senior members of this past 10-1 championship season signed commitments to continue their football careers at the collegiate level during the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football National Signing Day Wednesday, February 3. Those six individuals (pictured in the surrounding photos) inked their commitments to play at five different schools in three different divisions, Division I University of Iowa, Division II Quincy University, and Division III schools Coe, Wartburg and Wisconsin Lutheran.

Kee girls basketball team sweeps Clayton Ridge and South Winn at home

The Kee girls basketball game played to an undefeated week this past week, completing a pair of regular season sweeps of Upper Iowa Conference opponents at home. The Lady Hawks opened the week pulling out a 53-48 home win over Clayton Ridge Tuesday, February 2 before rolling over South Winneshiek at home, 61-35, Friday, February 5.

Now holding a 10-9 overall record, 9-7 in Upper Iowa Conference play, the Kee girls were next scheduled to wrap up their regular season with a home non-conference date against East Buchanan Monday, February 8. The Lady Hawks will then begin Class 1A Regional Tournament play, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 11 at Riceville, with further details of Kee’s postseason possibilities printed elsewhere on these Sports pages in a shaded box.

Taylor Peterson commits to Coe College bowling ...

At the beginning of this current Waukon High School bowling season, Waukon girls bowling senior Taylor Peterson signed her bowling abilities on with Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Pictured above at that ceremonial signing are (left to right) Waukon bowling coach Jerry Keenan, Taylor Peterson and her parents, Amanda (front) and Jesse Peterson (back). Peterson is the first Waukon girls bowler in the history of the young program to commit her bowling abilities to the collegiate level. Jakob Regan advances from Sectionals as 120-pound runner-up to lead mat Indians to sixth place; Regan will wrestle Saturday at District Tournament


Advances as 120-pound runner-up ... The 2020-2021 Waukon wrestling season came to a close for all but one Indian matman Saturday, February 6 as the mat Tribe competed for extension of its season at its Class 2A Sectional Tournament at Decorah. That lone Indian continuing his season is sophomore Jakob Regan, who wrestled to a runner-up finish at 120 pounds to advance to the Class 2A District Tournament to be wrestled at New Hampton this Saturday, February 13.

Behind the lead of that runner-up finish, the Indians scored 76 team points to place sixth in the tournament’s six-team final standings. Eight different Indians competed in the tournament, with the Indian point total also benefiting from a pair of third-place finishes, one each of fourth- and fifth-place finishes and three sixth-place finishes out of this past weekend’s postseason competitors.

Waukon wrestling team splits four battles at MFL/MarMac Duals, finishes in sixth place at Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament

The Waukon wrestling team had a busy latter portion week of this past week, competing in four dual meets late in the week before competing in a final weekend tournament prior to postseason competition. The Indians first competed in that four-dual event at MFL/MarMac Thursday, January 28, securing their first two dual meet victories of the season with wins over Clayton Ridge, 48-12, and over Oelwein, 45-34, but also falling to Postville, 44-30, and to the host Bulldogs, 66-9. The mat Tribe then competed in the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament Saturday, January 30 at Decorah, finishing sixth in the final team standings while having sophomore Jakob Regan wrestle to a team-best individual runner-up finish at 120 pounds.

The wrestling Tribe is next scheduled to prepare for its Class 2A Sectional Tournament at Decorah this Saturday, February 6, beginning at 12 noon.

Waukon bowling teams sweep Sumner-Fredericksburg at home

Roll past the 300 mark ... For the second time this season, both the Waukon girls and boys bowling teams came away victorious from a scheduled date, both squads recording victories at home over Sumner-Fredericksburg Friday, January 29. The Indian girls came away with a 2096-1876 victory for their fourth meet victory on the season and the Tribe boys completed the sweep by pulling out a close triumph, 2534-2509, to pick up their third victory of this 2020-2021 campaign.

The Indians had a winter weather threat cancel their Conference Tournament that had been scheduled for Saturday, January 30 at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.
