January proclaimed National Mentoring Month ...

At its Monday, January 4 regular session, the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors proclaimed January as National Mentoring Month. During that January 4 meeting, Helping Services for Youth and Families Mentoring Coordinator Kathy Schwartzhoff shared that currently there are 16 matches of mentors to youth from Allamakee County. During this past year, Helping Services provided mentors to 113 youth in Allamakee, Delaware, Howard and Winneshiek Counties, and 161 people served as volunteers during this past year in Youth Mentoring. Allowances are being made during this time of masking up and social distancing for mentors to meet with their mentees in other ways than in-person. The current need for mentors is actually more vital as many youth are struggling with balancing school schedules, adapting to online learning, and having challenges with families and friends.

Northeast Iowa RC&D releases virtual Urban Stormwater Demonstration Site Tour for educators to use in class

Site can now be toured by virtual means ... Pictured above is a bioswale at the Urban Stormwater Demonstration Site on the Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) campus in Postville. Educators have brought their students to the site over the past couple years to learn more about urban stormwater conservation and best management practices, but Northeast Iowa RC&D has recently developed a virtual tour of the site for all educators to view and use in their classrooms. Submitted photo.

For the past two years, educators in northeast Iowa have been invited to bring their students to the Regional Urban Stormwater Demonstration (RUSD) Site on the Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) campus in Postville. Visits to the RUSD Site include a tour of the urban stormwater best management practices and multiple hands-on learning activities that teach students about urban stormwater conservation and how communities affect water quality and flooding.

Over 30 northeast Iowa educational groups have visited the RUSD Site and taken part in the hands-on learning activities available thus far. Teachers who bring their students to the RUSD site are eligible for Watershed Guardian Grants to implement urban stormwater best management practices at their school or in their community.
