Carver Conway has Iowa's best fourth grade handwriting

Zaner-Bloser, the Language Arts and Reading Company, recently announced that Carver Conway, a fourth grade student at East Elementary school in Waukon, has been named Iowa’s best fourth grade handwriter. In addition to being honored as having Iowa’s best handwriting skills, Conway has been named a finalist in the 19th Annual Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Competition, where he will be judged against other state winners from across the country for the honor of being named Grand National Champion.

East Elementary sixth graders visit UNI campus

The sixth grade students of Waukon’s East Elementary School had the opportunity to take a bus ride to Cedar Falls and visit the University of Northern Iowa campus. Last September, sixth grade teacher Ms. Wendy Waldron filled out an application for a Target Field Trip Grant. She was notified in January that the application was approved. The students traveled to UNI April 8 along with several chaperones:  Mr. Stott, Mrs. Delphey, Mrs. Buresh, Mrs. Reinhardt and Ms. Waldron. Upon arrival, the Admissions Assistant Director, Jenny Connolly, and four UNI student ambassadors greeted them.

Music students take part in State Festival

Waukon High School (WHS) music students participated in the State Solo and Ensemble Festival that was held in Cresco Saturday, March 27. WHS vocal students are under the direction of Adrienne Gerst, and WHS instrumental students are under the direction of JoAnn Sherman.

Area students to be recognized as Outstanding High School Seniors by Governor Culver

More than 425 high school seniors from across Iowa will be honored Sunday, April 25 at the Eighth Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony, to be held at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines starting at 1 p.m. The recognition program is presented by the Governor’s Office, the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
Among this year's honorees are Kee High School senior Marie Kruse, daughter of Mark and Marcia Kruse of Lansing, and Waukon High School senior Brittany Kruger, daughter of Dave and Pam Kruger of Waukon.

Allamakee Community School District voters reject Instructional Support Levy

Voters in the Allamakee Community School District rejected the proposed Instructional Support Levy at the polls Tuesday, April 6 by a narrow margin, with 799 votes in favor of the levy and 890 votes opposed.
The proposed levy would have generated approximately $317,000 annually, with 60 percent coming from property taxes and the remaining 40 percent from an income surtax.

St. Patrick School to host 5K run/walk

St. Patrick School will be hosting a 5K walk/run Saturday, April 17 in Waukon. The event will be open to community members of all ages and is being hosted not only to promote healthy lifestyles but also to encourage positive ecology choices.
