WHS vocal students perform at Dorian

January 11, 1,392 high school students came together for the largest honor choir in the United States at the Center for Faith and Life at Luther College in Decorah for the 60th annual Dorian Vocal Festival Grand Concert. Waukon High School seniors Cassie Thorson, Lucas Wesling, Matt Johnson, Mackenzie Lyons and Johnny Bartling, and junior Elizabeth Riese participated in the event.

Registration for ACSD Kindergarten, Bright Beginnings February 10-11

Registration for Kindergarten and 5-Year-Old Bright Beginnings for the 2010-2011 school year in the Allamakee Community School District will be held as follows:
• Wednesday, February 10 at West Elementary in Waukon.
• Thursday, February 11 at Waterville Elementary.
As part of the registration procedure, the pre-school children and their parents will receive a letter inviting them to visit and participate in activities in the kindergarten classrooms. Vision screenings and parental information sessions are also scheduled.

ACSD Board approves resolution for April 6 ISL special election

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Education met in a special session Monday morning, January 25. While the agenda was short in length, it did cover some important ground.
First of all, the Board approved Tina Cooper as temporary board secretary, as Janice Rea was unable to attend the meeting.

Waukon High School to participate in Science Bowl

For the 20th consecutive year, the brightest high school students from across Iowa will travel to Ames Saturday, January 30 to compete in the Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl. Forty teams of students will compete to answer questions about astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, earth science, general science and math in the day-long, quiz-bowl format competition.

St. Patrick School's "Kiss the Rat" contest underway

The fourth grade students at St. Patrick School in Waukon are sponsoring the Sixth Annual Kiss The Rat Contest. This year, the contest will be called "The Fantastic Philanthropic Foray". All of the organizations participating in the contest this year benefit the youth in the local community. The six participating organizations and their rat kissing candidates include the Waukon Lions Club - Tom Phipps, the Boy Scouts - Don Haler, Dollars For Scholars - Julie Rotach,  the Girl Scouts - Marie Christianson and Holly Bark, 4-H - Kris Fahey, and St. Patrick School - Father Joe Schneider.

Alliant Energy Foundation offering community service scholarships

The Alliant Energy Foundation is offering scholarships to recognize outstanding community leadership in young people and help first-time college students attain their academic goals. Up to 25 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in the fall of 2010 through the Alliant Energy Foundation Community Service Scholarship Program.
