ACSD 6th-8th grade band students participate in solo/ensemble festival

All Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) band students in sixth through eighth grades participated in a solo/ensemble festival Tuesday, November 24. A number of the students earned high ratings and/or awards for their performances at the festival, most of whom are pictured in the surrounding photos.

NICC addressing budget concerns

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) announced that it has convened a task force to study how it can cut $1.9 million, or approximately 23 percent, from next year’s budget. This number is an estimate of what could be cut from the college’s state general aid in the next legislative session.
“With further declines in state revenue and no additional stimulus funding available, state general aid to community colleges is expected to be reduced dramatically,” stated Dr. Penny Wills, president of NICC.

St. Patrick School students take part in "I Got Caught" program

This fall, students at St. Patrick School in Waukon participated in the "I Got Caught" Program. The "I Got Caught" Program educates young Iowans about injury prevention during 45-minute presentations at elementary and middle schools. The presentation includes a movie, a talk by a VIP (Voice for Injury Prevention) speaker who shares with the children what it’s like to have a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, and a few fun demonstrations to encourage bike safety. As a part of the program, every student received a free bike helmet.

U.S. Cellular "Calling All Communities" campaign to award $1 million to schools

U.S. Cellular's Calling All Communities campaign will award $100,000 to 10 schools across the nation. Public and private schools, kindergarten through high school, big or small, are all eligible to win.
From now through January 15, 2010, individuals 18 years or older can visit any U.S. Cellular store to get a code to vote online for their school. There is no purchase necessary, and voters don’t have to be U.S. Cellular customers. The 10 schools with the most votes will receive $100,000 to use however they choose.

FBLA students meet with Senator Grassley

Waukon High School students (pictured left to right) Allison Brink, Alaina Hager, Shannon Neuzil and Paige Watkins recently met with Senator Chuck Grassley (center of photo) in Washington, D.C. The students were attending the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Conference in Baltimore, MD and spent time in Washington, D.C. touring the U.S. Capitol and visiting with Senator Grassley. The FBLA Conference included keynote speakers and events about leadership, personal finances, resume building, and preparation for college.
