WHS vocal music students attend UNI Vocal Arts Festival

A total of 21 Waukon High School Vocal Music Students under the direction of Adrienne Gerst attended the UNI Vocal Arts Festival October 4-5 in Cedar Falls. Dr. Harrison Boughton was Guest Conductor for the Festival. Literature performed at the concert included the 2009 Iowa All State Chorus music. Students in attendance at the festival included those pictured at right (left to right): Front row - Mackenzie Lyons, Katie Kleinow, Michelle Nelson, Cassie Thorson. Second row - Jackalyn Smith, Courtney Kious, Shannon Neuzil, Brittany Kruger, Megan Brodahl.

Allamakee County 4-H members do their part to "Meet the Future"

The theme for National 4-H Week, October 4-10, is “Meet the Future.” One way Iowa 4-H’ers are preparing for their future is by demonstrating how to take better care of planet Earth.
Iowa 4-H’ers have had a long-term commitment to protecting the environment.  Many of their projects focus on the “3R’s” to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Keystone AEA Board members elected

Area school boards elected four incumbents to the Keystone Area Education Agency Board of Directors during September elections.
Gary Gassett of Lime Springs was elected as the director in Director District 1. The director district includes the Riceville, Howard-Winneshiek, North Winneshiek, New Hampton, and Fredericksburg Community School Districts. Gassett will begin his second term on the Board.

Pioneer Living Experience teaches students

The Pioneer Living Experience was held Wednesday, September 23 for over 132 Allamakee County fourth grade students in the Allamakee, Eastern Allamakee and Postville Community school districts.
The Pioneer Living Experience is divided into six learning centers. See surrounding submitted photos for evidence of some of those centers.
In the Gold Rush Learning Center kids go panning for gold (pyrite) and weigh their find on a set of authentic miner’s scales, eventually keeping three pieces of their claim as an added bonus.

Area schools receive Bus Grants

More than 3,100 students now have an opportunity they may have otherwise missed to learn firsthand about Iowa’s rich agricultural heritage. During the third year of the Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA) Bus Grant Program, $12,000 has been awarded to 48 schools within the Heritage Area; helping cover the costs of field study trips to 24 different SSNHA Partner Sites.

ACSD Board of Directors reorganizes at September meeting held in Waterville

The Allamakee Community School District Board of Education gathered Monday night, September 21 for its annual re-organizational session. Waterville Elementary played host to this month’s meeting, which featured an agenda full of annual “to do” items.
