The final step in the playground project at East Elementary School in Waukon was recently taken when the donor wall was erected near the new playground equipment at the school. The wall brought to completion a multi-year project by the WE Care Partners in Education group to bring the vision of a newer, safer playground to reality.

The Waukon High School Music and Drama Departments will present "The Music Man" as their annual fall musical production. The stage performance will take place Thursday through Saturday, November 12-14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Waukon Junior/Senior High School Auditorium.

Members of the Waukon High School FFA Chapter were one of 43 teams participating in the 2009 National FFA Dairy Cattle Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE) held October 21-24 during the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN. The team of Amanda Meder, Patricia Melcher, Morgan Miller and Lars Sivesind represented the State of Iowa and placed ninth in the 43-team field.

Students in third through fifth grade art classes under the direction of Carlyn Wacker at East Elementary School in Waukon participated in the Waukon Fire Department's annual fire poster contest in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week. The theme for this year's contest was “Stay Fire Smart! High school seniors and their parents will be able to get information on the college financial aid process during a free presentation offered by Waukon High School and the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN). The event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 29 in the library of Waukon High School.
During the presentation, students and parents will receive answers to questions on topics like completing and filing financial aid forms, important deadlines, types of available financial assistance, scholarships and resources.

The Board of Directors of the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) met in regular monthly session Monday, October 19. Of utmost significance from the meeting was the report given by Superintendent of School Dave Herold, who explained that the 10% across-the-board budget cuts ordered by Governor Chet Culver would ultimately result in the loss of $608,000 in State funding for the district.
