Allamakee County will be offering free Family Day event September 28

Community Connections, Allamakee County Substance Abuse Prevention and Helping Services for Northeast Iowa will be hosting a Family Day event Monday, September 28 at the Waukon High School cafeteria from 5-7 p.m. A free meal will be provided and fun activities will keep the night entertaining for the whole family. Join other families from all over the country in celebrating Family Day September 28 by eating dinner together as a family.
September 8 the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors signed a Family Day Proclamation dedicating September 28 as Family Day.

Iowans to benefit from continuation of ISL Loan Forgiveness Programs

College students willing to teach or hold a nursing job in underserved areas can continue to apply to have their student loan debt forgiven thanks to the continuation of the Iowa Student Loan Teacher and Nursing Education Loan Forgiveness Programs. The Iowa Student Loan® board of directors recently voted to extend funding for the programs for the 2009-2010 school year.

Learn to manage children's behavior at 1-2-3 Magic series held in Waterville

Family Support Network will be offering a 1-2-3 Magic three-session class taking place at Waterville Elementary School in Waterville Mondays, October 19 and 26 and November 2,  from 6-8 p.m. Child care is provided.
This class is free, but class size is limited, so call Karsten or Mindy at Helping Services at (563) 387-1720 to sign up.

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) in Calmar is welcoming back students this fall by hosting its 7th Annual Fall Fest at the Calmar campus Thursday evening, September 10, from 5-8 p.m. Students and their families, along with the general public, are encouraged to join in the activities.

Nigerian student to study at Waukon High School

Mimidoo Shie, a 15 year-old from Benue State, Nigeria, will be studying at Waukon High School this year.
She was chosen by Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS), an Ames-based nonprofit, to receive a scholarship to study in Iowa for a year through the U.S. State Department’s Youth Exchange and Study Program.
Each year, IRIS brings 60 students from Nigeria and Tanzania to study in Iowa high schools. The students are top scholars in their home countries and go through a rigorous selection process before being offered the scholarship.

Allamakee County ISU Extension hosts variety of Day Camps during summer

The Allamakee County Iowa State University Extension Office had another successful year hosting its summer day camps for boys and girls completing grades kindergarten through sixth grade. Each day camp focused on a separate theme, such as mystery, invention, or exploration. The varied day camps enabled campers to experience nature, show their creativity, practice cooperation, gain self-confidence, and make new friends.
