Upper Explorerland Regional Housing Authority received notification that their grant application will receive funding from the Iowa Department of Economic Development. The funding will provide rental assistance and utility deposit assistance to eligible low income rental assistance households. The $187,000 awarded is to cover a two-year period of time.

Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois residents who share their time and talents to make a difference in the lives of community veterans will be honored during National Volunteer Week, April 17-23. Iowa City VA Medical Center will host a special National Volunteer Week ceremony Wednesday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m.

Allamakee Rural Recycling will be having their spring cleanup day Tuesday, April 19. This event is for rural residents of Allamakee County only. The hours for this event are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it will be held at the Recycling Center two miles north of Waukon on Hwy 9.

Items taken during these hours are chairs, sofas, household items and white goods, such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, etc. There will be a $10 charge for all appliances. Other items taken are oil and batteries. Tires and paint will not be taken.

Boy Scout Troop 64 will hold its semi-annual omelet breakfast fundraiser Sunday, April 24 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Hall in Waukon, serving from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The menu for the fundraising includes made to order omelets, hash browns, cinnamon rolls, coffee, milk and juice.

Tickets are available from all Troop 64 Boy Scouts in advance at a reduced rate, and will also be available at the door the day of the event. Carry-out orders are also available.

Waukon Senior High School’s 2005 Prom has been set for Saturday, April 23. Very caring volunteers for the past several years have provided a safe, substance-free post-prom celebration for all Waukon students and guests.

The Waukon Senior High School drama department will be presenting “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” this weekend as its spring play production. Performances are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. All tickets are general admission.

“The Pink Panther Strikes Again” is a comedy about the world’s most unusual criminologist, Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Clouseau fights for his life and the future of mankind in the most bizarre and dangerous caper of his successful and utterly clumsy career.

Highlighting the 2005 Waukon Chamber of Commerce annual banquet held Saturday, April 9 was the honoring of Waukon’s “Person of the Year” for the year 2005. Approximately 150 individuals were in attendance at this year’s banquet, held at the Waukon Reception and Banquet Center, to see this year’s award be given to Nona Sawyer of Waukon.

The Allamakee Athletic Booster Club, Keep the ‘W’ Burning Committee, and Waukon Wrestling Club have joined forces on a proposed new athletic training facility designed for use by Waukon Indian athletic programs. The following article will be the first in a series of several that are meant to inform and educate the public about how each of these committees helps the athletic teams and individuals of the Allamakee Community School District, and how this project is just another way of accomplishing that shared goal.
