The Upper Iowa women’s basketball team recently handed out its 2004-05 team awards. Four different Peacocks, all freshmen, took home awards.

Freshman Christa Hammel of Waukon was voted Most Valuable Player by her teammates. The 6-1 forward averaged 9.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest. She also set a single-season school record with 53 blocked shots. Hammel is the first freshman in program history to earn team MVP honors.

After a down year in 2004, the Waukon boys golf team is looking to improve in 2005. They’ve already shown improvement in their first outing, topping Postville and MFL-MarMac Tuesday, April 5 in Waukon. The Indians scored 167, their best team tally in two years, while Postville was second with 178 and MFL took third with 187 strokes.

Tami Magner (Fr.) was 2-for-3 with a double and a run April 6 as Luther downed Dubuque 6-3 and 5-3 in a softball doubleheader. Magner also helped in an April 7 split with St. Olaf. Luther won 4-2 and then lost 2-3.
Overall, Magner has the top slugging percentage for the Norse (.667) and is 3rd on the team with a.370 batting average.


Josh Tweedy (Sr.) was 5th in the 1500-meter (4:05.96) for the Iowa Hawkeyes at the April 9 Mark Messersmith Invitational at Northern Iowa.

Waukon’s girls golf team kicked off the 2005 season last Tuesday, April 5, notching 216 strokes to finish behind MFL-MarMac (209), but outshoot Postville (221) in a nonconference event at Tri-City Country Club near Luana.

Last week, the much-anticipated phone call arrived at Upper Iowa University today with a formal invitation from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) for Upper Iowa to join its ranks. Upper Iowa will accept the invitation which will be effective beginning with the 2006 fall semester. The University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.) was also extended an invitation.

Since September 2003, Upper Iowa has been an NCAA Division II Independent. UIU’s two-year provisional D-II membership concludes at the end of the current academic year.

Last week, Waukon’s boys track and field team competed in a couple of meets. The Tribe switched up its schedule to compete in an April 5 event at North Fayette, finishing third in the four-team field. Friday, April 8, Waukon competed at the Go-Hawk Invitational in Waverly. In the varsity division, the Indians were fourth, however the Tribe convincingly claimed the team championship in the freshman/sophomore class.

The Harpers Ferry Fire Department will be holding its annual Wild Game Feed Saturday, April 16 at the Harpers Ferry Fire Station. Food will be served beginning at 3 p.m.

There will be various items raffled throughout the evening, including a number of shotguns and rifles. At 8 p.m. there will be an auction featuring many items, including a hand carved wood eagle, the Larry Zach print “Big City Bucks” and the Michael Sieves print “Armistice Day”. All proceeds will go towards purchasing new equipment and everyone is welcome to attend.

Helen M. Schultz of Davenport died Thursday, April 7, 2005, at Crest Health Center, Davenport. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 9, 2005, at Runge Mortuary. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, Davenport. The Runge Mortuary and Crematory handled arrangements.

Helen was born November 24, 1920, in Waukon the daughter of Harry and Doris (Palmer) Heiser. Helen married Walter Schultz. He died on April 30, 1984.
