Duane Leppert of Lansing joins 57 other farmers who volunteer their time to share agriculture's story with their communities and the media, as members of the 2005 Iowa Farm Bureau Speaker Corps.

More than 80 Iowa Farm Bureau leaders took part in a trip to Washington, D.C., March 14-17 to lobby lawmakers on topics such as re-opening the border to Canadian cattle imports, the energy bill, and taxes. They also had the opportunity to voice their concerns over proposed farm program budget cuts.

Those participating in the trip included, from left: Duane Flatland, Waukon; Brian Dougherty, Waukon; Irene Lund, Elma; Linda Druecker, Arlington; and Phil Hemesath, IFBF District I director from Calmar.

Sign up for year number two is underway in farm country as selected producers in certain watersheds get the opportunity to become part of the most innovative farm program in years, the Conservation Security Program (CSP).

At least 40,000 farmers in six Iowa watersheds are among those invited to participate in the first national sign up of the historic new Conservation Security Program (CSP). This includes producers in two Iowa watersheds included in the 2004 CSP pilot program sign-up. The 2005 sign up will be available from March 28 to May 27, according to the NRCS.

Allamakee SWCD Commissioners meeting has been set for April 6
The April meeting of the Allamakee County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners will take place Wednesday, April 6 at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held at the USDA Service Center in Waukon.

In a continued effort to keep the public informed of the progress being made on the community improvement project first introduced at the end of last year and revisited in last week’s issue of The Standard, the steering committee for the project has broken down and outlined the estimated costs for the overall project. A search for architectural firms to help formulate the overall project is currently nearing completion.
