Entitled “The Little Red Jacket” and listed as Chapter Four in the book, the story tells how a red jacket donated to a clothing drive during World War II eventually resulted in the donor and recipient meeting face to face some 30-plus years later. Allamakee Rural Recycling will be having their spring cleanup day Tuesday, April 19. This event is for rural residents of Allamakee County only. The hours for this event are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it will be held at the Recycling Center two miles north of Waukon on Hwy 9.

Items taken during these hours are chairs, sofas, household items and white goods, such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, etc. There will be a $10 charge for all appliances. Other items taken are oil and batteries. Tires and paint will not be taken.

In a lengthy meeting Monday morning, April 4, the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors discussed several items that have been ongoing issues in past months. While they did not make absolute decisions to solve some of these issues, the board took necessary steps toward coming to final decisions.

Representatives of the Midwest Natural Resources Group (MNRG), a federal Interagency partnership, will hold two informal public “open house” meetings to present and demonstrate the final draft of the “Yellow River Initiative” web site for the Yellow River watershed. These meetings will be held at the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Waukon from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 13.

When the Federal Government called the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) last September 30, it wasn’t about taxes, or the lottery, and Barb Winters couldn’t have been more excited.

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, April 4. Two councilmen were absent, Joe Cunningham and Allen Lyon. Under departmental reports, Police Chief Clark Bollman reported that his department received two new desktop computers and expects two new laptop computers shortly courtesy of a Federal Homeland Security Grant. Water and Sewer Superintendent Robert Campbell reported that he received two bids for work to repair the city well at the fairgrounds. The low bid was from Northway Well, not to exceed $ 5,570.

As a means to help offset the expense incurred with the abundance of grass fires responded to during this time of year, the Rural Fire Association of the Waukon Pioneer Fire Department, in a meeting Monday evening, April 3, passed a measure to reserve the right to charge landowners for grass fires that the local volunteers respond to. This measure will go into practice immediately.

Despite the urging of using caution when burning during this early spring season, the Waukon Fire Department was still called out to a total of five grass fires within a two-day period this past weekend. The department fielded six total calls within a three-day period, the first being a check for carbon monoxide at 1851 Dug Road Friday, April 1.

Allamakee County has implemented new reporting standards for the year ended June 30, 2004, with significant changes in content and structure of the financial statements. The new financial statements include a Statement of Net Assets and a Statement of Activities which provide information about the activities of the County as a whole and present a longer-term view of the County’s finances. Also included is Management’s Discussion and Analysis of the County’s financial statements.
