Lorna Hansmeier



Lorna M. Hansmeier, 74, of Waukon, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Theresa Drake



Theresa (Troendle) Drake, 88, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and resident of Albuquerque, N.M., since 1952, died Sunday, April 3, 2005. Mass was celebrated Thursday, April 7 at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum. Entombment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. French Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Born in Lansing, Iowa, she married John L. Drake on April 21, 1937.

Car, ATV collide southeast of Waukon



A car and all-terrain vehicle were involved in a collision on Dry Hollow Road the afternoon of March 28.

According to the report, at about 4:45 p.m. the ATV, driven by Joshua L. Smith of Waterville, entered a corner on the wrong side of the road. Ronald A. Goeke, Guttenberg, was also rounding the corner and stopped. The ATV struck Goeke’s car, resulting in Smith and a passenger being thrown from the vehicle. The ATV came to rest in a ditch.

Erwin “Erv” Deters



Erwin “Erv” A. Deters, 84 of Eitzen, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday April 9, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif officiated and burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia, was assisting the family with arrangements.

Erv was born October 3, 1920, in Eitzen to Franklin H. and Rosa (Franzen) Deters. He married Rose Marie Privet June 1, 1944, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Caledonia.

Elsie Breitsprecher



Elsie K. Breitsprecher, 98, of Decorah, formerly of Waukon, died Friday, April 8, 2005, at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. At her request, there will be no services.

Elsie was born March 26, 1907, in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of David and Emma (Greiser) Knopf. She attended St. Patrick’s School in Waukon. Elsie spent one year in California, where she worked for Douglas Aircraft Company, and then returned to Waukon where she worked as a sales clerk at the JC Penney store for 27 years.

District Court weighs in on trio of cases

Waters-
Leonard F. Waters Jr., 19, pleaded guilty to a pair of charges after an Oct. 10, 2004, theft.
The report noted that Waters broke into an unidentified structure that day and took property valued at over $10,000.
Waters was sentenced to no more than five years in jail on a third degree burglary charge and no more than ten years on a count of theft in the first degree and fined a total of $1,750. Both the sentence and fine were suspended for a two to five year probationary period.

The local Grief Support Group will meet Tuesday, April 26, at 3 p.m. in the Dining Room at Veterans Memorial Hospital.

This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss, whether it be death, divorce, illness, or some other grief.

Please feel free to attend and bring a friend. This grief support group meets the last Tuesday of every month at Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Task Force examines Iowa antibiotic infections

The Iowa Antibiotic Resistant Task Force, consisting of Iowa public health and medical professionals, is releasing an updated report on the antibiotic resistance problem in Iowa and recommendations to be taken. This report also contains information about the steady increase in one type of infection, MRSA (methicillan resistant Staphylococcus aureus), and provides guidelines for the new “watchful waiting” approach for simple ear infections rather than prescribing antibiotics.
