Lansing City Council approves budget cuts for all departments

Lansing Mayor Mike Brennan called the regular City Council session to order at 7 p.m. Monday, February 2. Council members Don Peters, Joe Strobel, Bill Burke, Rebecca Conway and Jeff Bechtel were all present. The Consent Agenda, which consisted of the clerk and treasurer's report for December, receipts for the month of January and department report, Council minutes for the January 29 meeting and payment of claims, was approved.

Waukon City Council addresses numerous items at regular Monday session

The Waukon City Council met in regular session the evening of Monday, February 2. Councilmen Joe Cunningham and Steve Wiedner were absent. Mayor Keith Schroeder explained that Wiedner had recently been hospitalized but was now at home and doing much better.

Esther L. Schultz, 77, of Waukon died Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 5 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial will be at Dorchester Methodist Cemetery, Dorchester. Friends may call from 10:30 - 11 a.m. Thursday, February 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Vernon Melcher

Vernon Duane Melcher died Friday, January 30, 2009 at his home after a sudden illness. Memorial services will be Friday, February 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Waukon with Pastor Richard A. Iles officiating. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

Vernon Duane Melcher was born February 6, 1923 to John and Effie (Leas) Melcher in Linton Township, Allamakee County. He received his education at "Big Foot" rural elementary school.

Jean Kremer

Jean Irene Kremer, 73, of Clermont died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at her home following a long illness. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 31 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Clermont, with Rev. Dale Rausch officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.

Jean was born April 13, 1935 in Sumner to Veryl and Bernice (Meighan) Murphy. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner.

James T. Weymiller, 44, of Holmen, WI, formerly of Harpers Ferry, died Sunday, January 25, 2009 near Holmen, WI, following a snowmobile accident. Funeral services were held Friday, January 30 at United Methodist Church in Lansing, with Pastor Steve Hubbell officiating.

Lower outpatient volumes result in $21,000 loss in December for Veterans Memorial Hospital

The month of December showed yet another loss, $21,337, for Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH), and hospital administrator Mike Myers explained that part of the reason for the loss was that the outpatient revenue for the month was significantly under budget. "Overall, we're not where we expected to be in terms of outpatient," Myers said.
