Word for Word

As we look backward at the changes in the life of Jesus, as he went from the carpenter’s son from Nazareth to the Saviour of the World, we can perhaps apply life-changes as they still come to us all.  We can even include our environment! Unlike the palm-tree heaven of Israel, we here in our area can look out the window and see huge piles of snow heaped up all around us. But in a blink the snow can be gone and leaves return to trees and plants with flowers can emerge from the warming ground! A genuine weather change!

Obamacare not responsible for health care costs

To the Editor:
Mr. Dick Roggensack’s letter (1/29) raised several important issues regarding the out-of-control costs of our health care system, but unfairly blamed the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare for the costs.

Letter to the Editor: Impressive local support for Helping Services

To the Editor:
Sometimes I get caught up in negative things going on in the world, but as I review how our Holiday Lights/Magical Nights fundraising event went this past season, I am reminded how uniquely positive and supportive the local folks and my team at Helping Services are.

The Bottom Line

Secretary of Ag Bill Northey and DNR Director Chuck Gipp presented to the Natural Resource Committee about the Iowa Water Quality Initiative. This initiative targets specific parts of the state to do Nutrient Reduction Demo Projects. In our part of the state, this area is the Turkey River Watershed area. The program encourages farming practices that help to reduce soil erosion, and control nitrate and phosphorous contamination. One of the ways to participate in the program is to agree to plant a cover crop on your bare field over the winter.

News from the State House

The weeks of session are moving along at a blistering pace. The first funnel deadline is February 21st which is approaching quickly.
This week we heard from Major General Orr on the Condition of the Iowa National Guard. For the first time in 12 years, all Iowa National Guard members were out of Iraq and Afghanistan by last November. This remark by the general generated a standing ovation. We all support our troops when they are overseas, but are thrilled to have them home.

And then I wrote...

... that it is time for another rant in my continuing love-hate relationship with The Des Moines Register, the newspaper which has been delivered to this address since 1945.

Letter to the Editor: Changes at Waukon Redemption & Ice

To the Editor:
Many people have been asking, “Is the redemption center closing?” The answer is, “No, we do not want to close.” But the bottom line is that operating and maintaining a redemption center is a money-losing proposition under the current law.
