Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $30 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $10 (additonal photos are also $10). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 20") will also incur an additional charge of $9/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 20-inch column length. Marjorie Miller

Marjorie Charlotte Miller, 92, of Postville died November 15, 2016. Funeral Services were held Saturday, November 19 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville with Rev. Lynn Noel as the Officiant. Burial followed at the Postville Cemetery, Postville.

Marjorie Charlotte was born April 12, 1924 to William and Mary (Klein) Stock in rural Waukon. She was baptized May 11, 1924 and confirmed April 10, 1938 at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville. Marjorie attended rural school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1942.

Marjorie was united in marriage with Roland Miller April 12, 1944 at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, rural Postville. Two children were born to this union. Together they lived on a farm in rural Waukon until moving to Postville in 1989. She was a homemaker and farm wife.  Marjorie worked at the Good Samaritan Society in Postville for a few years.

Gordon "Gordy" Smerud

Gordon “Gordy” Smerud, 63, of rural New Albin passed away peacefully Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia, MN after a long battle with cancer. Burial of Gordy’s cremains took place Saturday, November 19 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, New Albin. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Caledonia Chapel in Caledonia, MN assisted the family with arrangements.

Gordon Dale Smerud was born April 8, 1953 to George and Betty (Weymiller) Smerud. He grew up and worked on the family farm. Gordy attended St. George High School in Lansing, where he met Mary Ellen Curran. They were married in 1975. Gordy and Mary Ellen were blessed with the birth of two children, a son, Jim, and a daughter, Cindi. They lived in New Albin with their children until they later divorced.

Gordy remained in New Albin and worked most of his life as a carpenter with his brother, Ron. He enjoyed being outdoors, playing cards and visiting with friends.

Mary "Kay" Mettille

Mary “Kay” Kathleen Mettille, 96, of Waukon died surrounded by her family Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Pius Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 18 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3:45 p.m. scripture service.

Leonard Needham

Leonard James Needham, 86, of South Haven, MI passed peacefully away in his sleep November 4, 2016 at Golden Orchards in Fennville, MI. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 12 at the St. Basil Catholic Church in South Haven, MI. Leonard was laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery in South Haven, MI.

Leonard was born November 10, 1929 to Leo and Ethel (Burckart) Needham in Monona. He married Jeanne Burns November 7, 1953 in Cedar Rapids and he served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Leonard raised horses on his gentleman farm. He lived and worked as a carpenter in Wilmot, WI until his retirement in 1998, when he and Jeanne retired to Lansing.  In 2012, they moved to the South Haven community to be close to their children.

Harold Brazell

Harold N. Brazell, 90, of Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully surrounded by family Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Mercy Hospice House in Hiawatha. Funeral Mass was held at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids Monday, November 14.

Harold was born in Harpers Ferry August 14, 1926, the third of four sons of Leo and Mabel Brazell. He was a proud veteran, serving in the Army during World War II (Pacific) and will be buried with military honors. He spent his working life with the phone company, retiring with U.S. West in Cedar Rapids in 1986. He enjoyed woodworking in his backyard garage, working in his large yard, and socializing with his many friends, neighbors and former co-workers.

Rose Barker

Rose Barker, 90, of Waukon, formerly of Postville, died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society, Waukon. Funeral Services were held Saturday, November 12 at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Postville, with Rev. Duane Smith as the Officiant. Burial followed at Frankville Cemetery, Frankville.

Rose was born April 7, 1926 to Wilhelm and Magdalena (Feickert) Limkemann in Leola, SD. She attended country school in Illinois through the eighth grade.

Rose was united in marriage with Warren Herman Barker April 17, 1948 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Frankville. Together they farmed in the Castalia, Ossian and Postville areas from 1948 to January 1978. Over the years, Rose did babysitting and also volunteered at the Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and sewing. Rose was always smiling and loved doing things for others. Attending church and reading her Bible were very important to her.

Arthur Eaton, Jr.

Arthur John “Art” Eaton, Jr., age 87, of Randolph Township in Minnesota passed away October 28, 2016 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN after a hard fought seven-week battle with aspiration pneumonia. He was surrounded by his family and friends.

A funeral service was held Saturday, November 5 at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls, MN. Burial was at St. Joseph’s of the Lakes Cemetery in Lino Lakes, MN.

Art was born to Arthur J. Eaton, Sr. and Alice Hendrickson Eaton in Waukon February 16, 1929. When Art was a year old, he and his family moved to Apple Valley, MN, where his parents owned and operated Eaton’s Ranch, a business that would stay operational into the 1970s. Art worked with his family at the ranch helping with various chores such as hay rides, sleigh rides, trail rides and rodeos.

Curtis Kruger

Curtis D. “CD” Kruger, 89, of Waukon died Monday, October 31, 2016 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Friday, November 4 at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial with military rites was in the church cemetery.

Curtis Dale “CD” Kruger was born October 22, 1927 in Waukon. He was the son of John and Hulda (Kiesau) Kruger. Curt was baptized and confirmed at Salem United Church of Christ, attended the rural Krumme School in Ludlow Township, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1945. His parents died when he was young and he lived with various relatives through high school.

Ida Duffy

Ida M. Duffy, 78, of Waukon died Friday, October 28, 2016 at her home. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, November 3 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3:30 p.m. scripture service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Patrick School and Robey Memorial Library, both in Waukon.

Ida Marie Duffy was born July 23, 1938 to Lee and Effie (Clapper) Pleggenkuhle. She grew up on a farm near Hawkeye, along with her parents and three older siblings, Carl, Lois and Ruth. At the age of four, Ida began following her siblings to their country school in Richfield Township. Ida graduated from Hawkeye High School at the age of 16, and proceeded to obtain her teaching degree from Iowa Teachers College two years later (now the University of Northern Iowa).

Barbara Mulholland

Barbara “Barb” Mulholland, 94, of Lansing died Friday, October 28, 2016 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 5 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing, with Rev. John Moser as officiant. Inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing.

Visitation will be Friday, November 4 from 4-7 p.m. at the Thornburg-Grau Funeral home in Lansing and one hour before services at the church Saturday.

Barb was born December 12, 1921 in Lansing, the daughter of George Sr. and Martha “Mary” (Glynn) Whalen. Barb graduated from Lansing public Schools. She was a member of the Navy WAVES during WWII.
