Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $45 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $15 (additonal photos are also $15). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5") will also incur an additional charge of $11/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. Alice (Hermeier) Harkreader

Alice J. Harkreader, 87, passed away at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at P.A. Peterson Home in Rockford, IL. Services were held Tuesday, January 27 at Sundberg Funeral Home, Ltd., Rockford, IL, with Rev. Chuck Olson officiating. Burial was in Scandinavian Cemetery, Rockford, IL.
Alice was born June 23, 1927 in Waukon, the daughter of Fred and Florence (Klein) Hermeier. She married  Robert B. Harkreader in St. Petersburg, FL October 6, 1966. She was formerly employed for 15 years at The Broadway Restaurant.
Alice was a member of Navy Club Ship #1. She enjoyed working in her garden, reading and visiting her hometown in Iowa. Throughout her life she exercised the good values she learned in childhood from her mother.

Richard "Dick" Aschom

Richard “Dick” Aschom, 73, of Brookfield, WI passed into eternal life January 9, 2015 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Services were held January 14, 2015 in New Berlin, WI.
Dick attended St. George High School in Lansing. He was manager of Midwest Audio Visual Equipment in Chicago, IL for many years. After retirement, he spent time doing the things he loved; fishing, golfing and living life to the fullest with his beloved wife, Barbara.

Michael "Mickey" Aschom

Michael “Mickey” Aschom, 71, peacefully entered into his heavenly home January 22, 2015 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford, MN. Services were held Saturday, January 24 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford, MN, with Pastor Roger Michaelson officiating. Internment will be at Gethsemane Cemetery in Lansing.
Mickey was born October 19, 1943 to Norbert and Catherine (Hawkins) Aschom in La Crosse, WI, one of eight children. He attended Immaculate Conception School in Lansing.
Mickey met the love of his life in La Crosse, WI and October 17, 1992 he made Marion his wife. The couple moved to Rushford, MN in 2001.

Kenneth Nierling

Kenneth John Nierling, 65, of Waukon died Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon after a short battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 4 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Conrad Rosendahl officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at St. Mary's Lycurgus Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services Wednesday, February 4 at the funeral home.
Kenny was born July 25, 1949 in Waukon, the son of Anton Peter and Lenora May (Spores) Nierling. He was self-employed doing various types of work. June 9, 1978 he married Julie Hamm in Waukon. They later divorced.

Robert "Bob" Cota

Robert W. “Bob” Cota, 90, of Harpers Ferry died Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 4 at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, with Fr. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Paint Rock Cemetery, Harpers Ferry.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 3 at St. Ann's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, where there will be a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon is handling arrangements.
Robert William Cota was born March 12, 1924 just north of Harpers Ferry on a farm that has been in the Cota family since 1850. He was the third of nine children born to William Leo and Marie (Hawes) Cota. Bob was baptized and confirmed at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry and attended the local school. Following his schooling he began farming with his parents.

Helen Delaney

Helen Ann Delaney, 71, of Harpers Ferry died Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Thornton Manor, Lansing. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 31 at St. Ann-St. Joseph Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, with Rev. John Moser as the Celebrant. Burial followed at St. Joseph-Paint Rock Cemetery, rural Harpers Ferry.
Helen was born December 2, 1943 to Napoleon C. and Lillian E. (Crowley) Martelle north of Harpers Ferry, the homestead of her grandparents, Gideon and Adeline (Valley) Martelle. Helen was baptized December 5, 1943 by Rev. John J. Costelloe at Immaculate Conception Church, Wexford. She graduated from St. George High School in Lansing.
November 3, 1962, Helen was united in marriage with Martin James Delaney at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. Three children were born to this union, Julie, Steven and Joanne.

Ronald Rober

Ronald E. Rober, 81, of Dorchester died Monday, January 26, 2015 at his home. Memorial services were held Saturday, January 31 at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Eitzen, MN, with Pastor Michael McCann officiating and military honors rendered by the United States Army Funeral Honor Guard. Burial will be in the church cemetery at a later date.
Ronald was born June 21, 1933 in Waukon to Erwin and Lulu (Fruechte) Rober. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s UCC in Eitzen, MN, where he was a lifelong member and served on the council. After graduating from Waukon High School in 1951, he farmed for two years. In 1953, Ronald was drafted into the United States Army, spent two years at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX and was honorably discharged in 1955. He then went back to farming on Golden Ridge until retiring in 2005. For several years Ronald measured land for the feed grain program and also worked at Deter’s Implement off and on for two years.

Travis Baughman

Travis W. Baughman, age 45, of Harpers Ferry passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. A Celebration of Travis’ Life will be held from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, January 31 at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, WI. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.
Travis was born February 23, 1969 in San Jose, CA, the son of Conrad and Marian (Ivancovich) Baughman. Travis currently worked as a contractor with his father for Baughman Construction.  He was a talented artist and enjoyed painting, tile work and making household items, including furniture.

LaVern Johnson

LaVern Russell Johnson, 81, of Postville died suddenly at his home Thursday morning, January 22, 2015. Funeral Services were held Monday, January 26 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, with Rev. Steve Brackett as the Officiant. Burial followed in the Postville Cemetery, Postville with Military Rites.
Lavern was born September 20, 1933 to Oscar and Selma (Wilke) Johnson in rural Allamakee County. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Waukon.
LaVern attended country school in Allamakee County and finished his education through grade twelve, upon joining the Air Force in October of 1952. During his four years of service, he was stationed overseas for much of the time as an airplane mechanic. He was honorably discharged in September of 1956 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Lynn Morrow

 Lynn W. Morrow, 98, of Waukon died Friday, January 23, 2015 at his home in Waukon. Memorial services were held Monday, January 26 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Pastor Kim Gates officiating. Inurnment was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.
Lynn Wallace Morrow was born April 9, 1916 in Gladbrook, the son of Harry E. and Myrtie (Person) Morrow. His father was a lifelong Methodist minister serving churches throughout northeast Iowa so Lynn lived in a variety of places. In 1934, Lynn graduated from Buck Creek High School, then received his B.A. degree from Cornell College in 1938, and in 1941, he received his J.D. degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. That same year Lynn was admitted to the Iowa Bar.
