Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $30 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $10 (additonal photos are also $10). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 20") will also incur an additional charge of $9/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 20-inch column length. Leo Long

Leo Long, 93, of Burlington died at 1:15 a.m. Friday, October 21, 2016 at Burlington Care Center. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, October 28 at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating.  The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at IOOF Cemetery, Bloomfield.

Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. Thursday, October 27 at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Dave Roever Foundation.

Born in 1923 in Wapello County, he was the son of George and Elsie Long. In 1944 he married Helen Hawkins in Davis County.  She preceded him in death in 1979.

Leo was a World War II Army veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre at the rank of tech sergeant. He served from 1943 until 1946.

Avis Smith

Memorial Services for Avis Jean Smith will be held this Saturday, October 29 at McGregor Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. She passed away in the late evening May 10, 2016 at Thornton Manor in Lansing with her two sons, Jack and Charlie Smith, by her side.

Avis Smith was born October 10, 1946 in Clay, WV. She enjoyed visiting family and friends, and volunteering at the Lansing and McGregor nursing homes. She donated money to ASPCA and loved her cats.

Sylvia Macauley

Sylvia I. Macauley, 81, of Waukon died Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Pastor Grant VanderVelden officiating. Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the church before services.

Willis Johanningmeier

Willis Werner Johanningmeier, 95, of Monona died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Great River Care Center, McGregor. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, October 21 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Monona. Visitation will be Thursday, October 20 from 4-7 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona and one hour before services at the church Friday.

Karen Reck

Karen Faye Reck, 74, of Cedar Rapids passed away suddenly with her loving family surrounding her Friday, October 14, 2016. A visitation will be held Tuesday, October 18 from 5-7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 19 at 3 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids.

Karen was born February 11, 1942 to Richard and Martha (Thoresen) Kruger in Waukon. She married Jerold D. Reck May 31, 1980 in Marion. Karen worked as a Para teacher for College Community School for many years and she was the owner of Silk Florals by Karen.  In her spare time when she wasn’t with her children, foster children and grandchildren, she spent her time doing different crafts.

Mary Bustamante

Mary A. Bustamante, 55, of Waukon died Friday, October 14, 2016 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Friends may greet the family at a visitation time Saturday, October 29 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Monona Community Center in Monona. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon is assisting the family.

Mary Ann Bustamante was born April 8, 1961 in McGregor, the daughter of Joyce Harry and Eugene Cahoon. She attended Garnavillo schools. Mary worked for a time at Wapsie Produce in Decorah. An animal lover, Mary was always surrounded by pets and currently had five dogs and three birds she cared for. She also collected figurines and looked for wolf and Native American figures. Mary enjoyed playing cards and board games and loved spending time with family.

John Gruber, 64, of La Crosse, WI died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 21 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lansing. There will be a visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday before Mass at the church. Inurnment will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing.

Edna Elsheimer

Edna A. Elsheimer, 89, of New Albin passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 18 at the Evangelical Church of Peace, Crooked Creek Township, rural Freeburg, MN. Rev. William J. Reese officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Edna was born April 12, 1927 in Crooked Creek Township to William and Gertrude (Arndt) Neumann. October 12, 1945, Edna married Walter Elsheimer at Peace Church in Crooked Creek. Together they farmed in Crooked Creek Township all of their lives.

Edna had a love for raising chickens and she delivered the eggs to many people in the surrounding areas; she especially enjoyed the visits she had with people while making deliveries. Edna and Walter enjoyed 62 years of marriage before Walter's passing June 15, 2008.

LaVerne Sorum

LaVerne Sorum, 90, of Waukon died Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 18 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Pastor Ronald Pederson officiating. Burial was at East Paint Creek Synod Cemetery, rural Waterville.

Moris LaVerne Sorum was born April 22, 1926 in Waukon, the son of Moris A. and Lulla G. (Gilbertson) Sorum. He was baptized May 23, 1926 and later confirmed November 16, 1941. LaVerne attended Bakkum School Center #4 through the eighth grade. September 11, 1964, he married Linda Lou Beardmore at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Conrad Baughman

Conrad L. Baughman, age 72, of Harpers Ferry passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, just 20 days following the death of his wife, Sandra. A Celebration of Conrad’s Life will be held Friday, October 14 where his family will be greeting friends from 2-4 p.m. with a eulogy to follow at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, WI. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Conrad was born February 3, 1944 in San Jose, CA, the son of Isaac and Reba (Swisher) Baughman. He married Sandra Burchfield September 2, 1972. She preceded him in death September 19 of this year.
