Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $40 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $10 (additonal photos are also $10). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5") will also incur an additional charge of $11/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. Janice Keith

Janice Keith died August 10, 2022 with her family at her side. A memorial service will be held Monday, September 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Highway 72, Sarasota, FL 34241. A reception will follow.

Janice was born in Lansing March 13, 1938 to Carl and Rita Troendle. She married James F. Gaulrapp August 30, 1958 and Robert W. Keith August 11, 1994.

Survivors include eight children, Kimberely (Keith) Richardson, Walter Gaulrapp, Laurie DeLoach, Mary Gaulrapp, George Gaulrapp, Peter Tuan (Christine) Le, Angela Tien (Hanh) Chau and Thi (Hai) Le; eight step-children, Polly (Lee) Scotland, Kris (Bob) Schmitt, Sugi (Tim) O’Neil, Kent (Karen) Keith, Andy Keith, Alison (Tim) Rongitsch, Phoebe (Bob) Meyer and Peter (Bebe) Keith; one brother, Richard (Jan) Troendle; two sisters, Ellen Smith and Suzanne (Greg) Gilbertson; one sister-in-law, Freida Troendle; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Dennis Regan

Dennis W. Regan, 75, of Waukon died Saturday, September 3, 2022 at his home in rural Waukon. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 9 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon with Fr. John Moser and Fr. Jerry Blake officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church Friday. Arrangements are being handled by Martin-Grau Funeral Home of Waukon.

Dennis William Regan was born November 17, 1946 in Waukon, the son of William “Bill” Maurice and Angela Mary (Schulte) Regan. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon.

Dennis attended Lycurgus country school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1965. He served in the United States Army from 1966 until 1967, during the Vietnam War.

Richard Twait

Richard James Twait was born August 2, 1943 in Estherville. He was the third son of Oliver and Dorothy Twait. He passed away August 30, 2022 at Winona Health Hospital in Winona, MN. Funeral service was Tuesday, September 6 at Central Lutheran Church, Winona, MN. A burial will be at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, MN.

Richard attended Vernon #7 Country School and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1961. He attended Emmetsburg Junior College and graduated from Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, NE.

While attending college, he worked summers in road construction and met his future wife, Peggy Miller, in Des Moines. They married in Olds in 1965 and had two children: Brian and Brenda.

Richard taught school and coached football and basketball for nine years in Waukon. In 1977 he and his family moved to the Winona area in Minnesota where he and Peggy became the co-owners and managers of Minnesota City Bus Service for the next 28 years.

Leona Mooney

Leona K. Mooney, 94, of Lansing, formerly of New Albin, died Monday, August 22, 2022 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Friday, August 26 at Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Sevcik officiating and burial in the church cemetery in rural Lansing.

Leona Kathryn Mooney was born January 4, 1928 in rural Waukon, the daughter of Joseph Leo and Mary Theresa (Ryan) O’Neill. She attended West Ridge country school in rural Waukon, graduated from Waukon High School in 1946, and attended college in La Crosse, WI, where she received her teaching certificate; later she took some classes at Winona State College. Leona taught in country schools in Allamakee County. February 21, 1955, she married Cyril Mooney at Immaculate Conception Wexford Catholic Church. After their children were born, she was a stay-at-home mom.

Norma Perry

Norma Jean Perry, 76, passed away peacefully Friday, August 26, 2022 at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, with her family by her side. Funeral Service will be held Friday, September 2 at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville with Karla Johnson as the officiant. Inurnment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, September 1 at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home in Postville. There will also be a one-hour visitation before service at the church Friday.

Norma was born December 31, 1945 to Dale and Minnie (Hill) Weston in Decorah. She graduated from Valley High in 1964. Norma was united in marriage to Kenneth M. Perry June 7, 1964 at the Methodist Church in Elgin.

Winifred "Winnie" Ferring

Winifred “Winnie” L. Ferring, 91, of Lansing passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Riverside Transitional Care Center in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Friday, August 26 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was at Gethsemane Catholic Cemetery in Lansing.

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home in Lansing handled the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing or to Riverside Transitional Care in La Crosse (2575 7th Street South, La Crosse, WI 54601).

Winifred Louise Ferring was born November 27, 1930 in Waukon, the daughter of James Merle and Shirley (Nierling) Barthell. Winnie graduated from Waukon High School.

Helen McCormick

Helen Marie McCormick, age 76, of Cole, OK died Friday, August 12, 2022 in Norman, OK. A funeral mass was held Friday, August 26 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Chickasha, OK. Arrangements were under the direction of Eisenhour Funeral Home of Blanchard, OK.

The daughter of Arland Dean and Veda (Farris) Martin, Helen was born June 26, 1946 in Oklahoma City, OK. Helen married Earl James McCormick July 3, 1968 in Wichita Falls, TX. She worked many years as a Registered Nurse and was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Chickasha, OK. In her spare time, Helen enjoyed reading mystery novels, attending her grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ sporting events, shopping for antiques, buying items on sale, and going to auctions.

Gary Wohlers

Gary L. Wohlers, 78, was born November 26, 1943 in Caledonia, MN and passed away Friday, August 19, 2022 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. A memorial service will be held September 30 in New Albin. Family and friends will be notified of the details, which are still to be determined.

Gary grew up in New Albin, the son of Earl and Bertha Wohlers. He had two brothers, Bob and Randy, and three sisters, Annette, Jan and Diane. Gary excelled at sports and in choir.  A handsome and outgoing young man… so full of life.

After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy. He sang in the Navy Choir and sang on an official Navy album. He was trained as a signalman on a ship. He served in Vietnam. Sadly, the war took a toll on him.

Edward J. O’Neill, 78, of Shellsburg passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2022. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 26 at 2:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist West Ridge Catholic Church Cemetery, rural Waukon. He was born October 16, 1943 to Harold and Alice (Ryan) O’Neill.

Helen Christianson

Helen E. Christianson, 80, of Waukon died Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Patty Elwood Center in Cresco. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 20 at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating and with burial in the church cemetery. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements.

Helen Evelyn Christianson was born February 13, 1942 in the Village Creek area of Lansing, the daughter of Arthur and Ardis (Wilder) Cole. She attended Village Creek country school before graduating from Lansing High School.
