Obituaries are published in The Standard newspaper for a $150 fee and can be emailed to news@waukonstandard.com. That publication cost also includes one photo, additional photos may also be published at a cost of $15 per photo. Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5” - approximately 400 words) will also incur an additional charge of $15/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. Linus “L” Liddle

Linus “L” Lavel Liddle, age 78, died unexpectedly July 18, 2022 at home of natural causes. A visitation and service was held Monday, July 25 at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria, VA. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to At Home in Alexandria or the charity of your choice.

L was born May 18, 1944 in Fairbank. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul DeWitt Liddle and Ruth Geneva (Mork) Liddle; and his sister, Sonya Karlene (Liddle) Christianson, all of Iowa. L attended both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. He was a 1962 graduate of Waukon High School.

He had a career with the federal government and worked in the (then) Civil Service Commission, the Bureau of the Census, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). He met his wife, Ann, at the Census Bureau and they were married March 16, 1974. L retired in 1995 (as did Ann). They enjoyed many years of retirement and travel and tried to stay out of each other’s way.

Mary (Howes) Flottmeyer

Our mother, Mary Catherine (Howes) Flottmeyer, 91, of La Crosse, WI died July 6, 2022 surrounded by her children and loved ones at Eagle Crest South in La Crosse. Funeral mass was held at Blessed Sacrament Church, La Crosse July 12, with Rev. Brian D. Konopa officiating. Burial took place in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Wilburt Topel

Wilburt William Topel of Milwaukee, WI passed away January 21, 2017 at the age of 90 years. Visitation will be held Friday, January 27 at Heritage Funeral Home, located at 6615 West Oklahoma Street in Milwaukee, WI, from 4-7 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday, January 28 at Wisconsin Memorial Park, located at 13235 West Capitol Drive in Brookfield, WI, from 10-11 a.m. with a service to follow at 11 a.m.

Wilburt was born April 23, 1926 in Linton Township, Allamakee County. He was the son of Herman and Selda (Timmerman) Topel and the loving husband of the late Lucille for 58 years. He was also the beloved father of Sandra Dowske, Vicki Topel, Russell (Wina) Topel and Dennis Topel; proud grandpa of seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and caring brother of Alfred Topel, Donald (Delores) Topel, Wayne (Barbara) Topel and Gary (Jamie) Topel. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bernadette Unterberger

Bernadette “Sissie” Rose Unterberger, 93, of The Meadows-Shell Rock, formerly of Waterville, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 21 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly, with Fr. Bernie Grady and Fr. Lou Jaeger officiating. Burial of cremated remains will take place October 19, 2017, at St. Mary Cemetery in New Hampton.

Bernadette was born at home February 10, 1923 in New Hampton, the daughter of John and Rose (Tekippe) Eschweiler. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School for eight years and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1940. During World War II she was employed at Chamberlains in Waterloo. She then worked at First National Bank in New Hampton, which she loved.

James Thomson

James Edward Thomson was born July 5, 1926 in Waukon to Edward Thomson and Emma Sorlie Thomson, and died January 17, 2017 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. A private graveside service will be held at a future date at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.

June 10, 1951, James was united in marriage with Virginia Lee Peck at Garner. They had three children, John Thomson, Jeanne James and Janice Thomson, and two grandchildren, Andrew James and Clementine Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Thomson, in 2015.

James was educated in the Waukon public schools, graduating from Waukon High School in the class of 1943. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls in 1949; attended graduate school at the University of Colorado and University of Iowa; and received a J.D. degree from the University of Iowa Law School in 1956.

Helen Evanson

Helen Delores Evanson, 91, of Waukon died Friday afternoon, January 20, 2017 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28 at 11 a.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, January 27 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and one hour before services Saturday at the church.

Helen Delores Aure Evanson was born May 11, 1925 in Waukon to Haftor and Emelia (Engen) Aure. Helen was baptized and confirmed at Old West Paint Creek in rural Waterville. She was raised on the family farm and attended the Fan School in rural Waukon.

Barbara Homewood

Barbara A. Homewood, 58, of Waukon died Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 28 at 11 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser  officiating. Friends may call one hour before the services Saturday at the church.

Lloyd Schutte

Lloyd Helmuth Schutte, 86, of Castalia died Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society, Waukon. Funeral Services were held Saturday, January 21 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville with Rev. Lynn Noel as the Officiant. Burial was at Postville Cemetery, Postville.

Lloyd was born July 11, 1930 to Elmer C. and Marie (Backhaus) Schutte on the family farm near Castalia. He was baptized August 23, 1930 and confirmed April 2, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. Lloyd graduated from Postville High School in 1948.

Stanley Schulte

Stanley “Stan” Norbert Schulte, 57, of McGregor, formerly of New Albin, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 at his home in McGregor. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, January 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin with Reverend John Moser as the Celebrant. Burial followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in New Albin.

Stanley was born August 20, 1959 to Norbert and Rita (Kelly) Schulte in Spring Grove, MN. He graduated from Kee High School in 1977. Stan always enjoyed a good game of cards and playing bingo. He really enjoyed the many family trips to the cabin resorts in northern Minnesota, especially the long pontoon rides on the lakes.  Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Catherine Thayer

Catherine Ann Thayer, 76, of Dallas Center, formerly of West Des Moines, passed away surrounded by her family Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Unity Point Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services were held Monday, January 23 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee. Burial followed at Beaver Catholic Cemetery near Granger.

Catherine was born January 11, 1941 in Waukon to Walton and Mary (Baxter) Mellick. After graduating from St. Patrick’s Catholic High School, she attended and graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids in 1962. Catherine started her career in nursing at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
