Waukon girls track team finishes fifth at own Indian Relays, wins the MFL/MarMac Invitational; Cameron Johnson makes high jump school record all her own at 5’4”


New high jump school record ... Waukon girls track junior Cameron Johnson clears the high jump bar on her way to a new school record at the track Tribe’s own Indian Relays Tuesday, April 25. Johnson jumped 5’4” to finish with the same final height as New Hampton senior and University of Iowa recruit Carlee Rochford but finished second in the event on number of previous misses criteria. However, that 5’4” height gives Johnson the new school record in the event, as she had cleared 5’3-1/2” a few days earlier to tie that previous school record that had originally been set by 1977 Waukon High School graduate Renee (Weymiller) Van Horn during her senior season. The Waukon girls track team got both of its scheduled meets in this past week, with those meet results getting better as the week wore on. The lady track Tribe finished fifth at its own Indian Relays Tuesday, April 25 before zooming to the top of the MFL/MarMac Invitational field in Monona Thursday, April 27.

The Lady Indians were next scheduled to compete at Edgewood-Colesburg Monday, May 1 before competing in the Northeast Iowa Conference Track Meet in New Hampton Thursday, May 4. The Waukon girls will then prepare for their Class 2A State Qualifying scheduled for Thursday, May 11 at Monticello.

Kee girls track team finishes second at Clayton Ridge Invitational, places fourth at MFL/MarMac Invitational

The Kee girls track team competed in a pair of meets this past week at the homes of fellow Upper Iowa Conference squads. The Lady Hawks finished second at the Clayton Ridge Co-Ed Invitational held at the Stephen D. Shannon Athletic Complex in Guttenberg Tuesday, April 25 before claiming fourth place as a team at the MFL/MarMac Invitational held in Monona Thursday, April 27.

The Hawk track girls were next scheduled to travel to Edgewood-Colesburg Monday, May 1 for a final regular season invitational meet before venturing back to Clayton Ridge Thursday, May 4 for the Upper Iowa Conference Meet. The Lady Hawks will then return to Edgewood-Colesburg for their Class 1A State Qualifying Meet Thursday, May 11.

Waukon boys track team finishes runner-up at own Indian Relays, four team members score enough points to finish seventh at Tipton Invite


Blasting out of the blocks ... Waukon boys track senior James VanderVelden erupts out of the starting blocks on his way to leading off the Indians’ distance medley relay team that ran to victory in a time of 3:57.83. In the final home meet of his high school career, VanderVelden also anchored the track Tribe’s sprint medley relay squad to a win in a time of 1:42.62 and finished second in the 400 meter hurdles with a clocking of 1:01.66. The Waukon boys track team ended up with just one full team competition this past week, as its Monday, April 17 Decorah Invitational was called off due to weather conditions. Several Indians were able to compete in a handful of events at the Tipton Invitational Tuesday, April 18, compiling enough team points to finish seventh in that nine-team field, and the track Tribe then hosted its own Indian Relays home invitational Friday, April 21, finishing in second place.

The Indians were next scheduled to compete in the Crestwood Invitational at Cresco Thursday, April 27. The track Tribe is then slated to compete at New Hampton Monday, May 1 before competing in the Northeast Iowa Conference Track Meet upon returning to New Hampton Thursday, May 4.

Waukon girls track team finishes second at Crestwood Invitational, brings victory home from Kee; Johnson ties oldest record, qualifies for Drake with 5’3.5” high jump

What was anticipated to be an extremely busy week of three meets in four nights for the Waukon girls track team had the last of those meets trimmed from the schedule by Mother Nature Friday, April 21 as the North Fayette Valley Invitational was called off. The Lady Indians did compete in two other meets earlier in the week and fared quite well in each of them, finishing second at the Crestwood Invitational in Cresco Tuesday, April 18 before winning the Gary Bottorff Invitational hosted by Kee in Lansing Thursday, April 20.

The Lady Indians were next scheduled to host their own Indian Relays Tuesday, April 25 before competing at MFL/MarMac Thursday, April 27, with further details of the Indian Relays being printed in a shaded box elsewhere on this week’s Sports pages. The track Tribe is then slated to compete at Edgewood-Colesburg Monday, May 1 before competing in the Northeast Iowa Conference Track Meet in New Hampton Thursday, May 4.

Kee girls track team places sixth at the Crestwood Invitational, finishes runner-up at own Gary Bottorff Invitational at home

The Lady Hawks finished sixth at the Crestwood Invitational in Cresco Tuesday, April 18 before finishing in second place at their own Gary Bottorff Invitational Thursday, April 20.

Kee boys track team finishes fourth at own Gary Bottorff Invitational

In its only meet of this past week, the Kee boys track team finished fourth in what is also its only home meet of this season Thursday, April 20. The Hawks recorded one event win and claimed three runner-up finishes to pace their way to 55 team points.

The Hawks were next scheduled to compete in the Clayton Ridge Invitational Tuesday, April 25 before traveling to MFL/MarMac Monday, May 1. The Kee boys will return to Clayton Ridge May 4 for the Upper Iowa Conference Meet.

Waukon boys golf team wins season-opening home triangular, finishes second in triangular at Tri-City

The Waukon boys golf team was finally able to get its competition schedule underway this past week, finding pretty good success in defeating three of its opponents faced in a pair of triangular meets. The Indians first topped both Crestwood and South Winneshiek in a home triangular Monday, April 10 before finishing just behind MFL/MarMac but ahead of Postville the very next night in another triangular event played at Tri-City Golf and Country Club near Luana Tuesday, April 11.

The Indians were next scheduled to play in three meets this week, but had a Monday, April 17 meet at Crestwood canceled by winter weather. They are next slated to play back-to-back nights at Waverly-Shell Rock, Thursday, April 20, and at Oelwein, Friday, April 21, in an event postponed from April 4. The golf Tribe will then host Charles City Tuesday, April 25, play in the South Winneshiek Triangular Thursday, April 27 and then play host to both New Hampton and Caledonia, MN Friday, April 28.

Waukon girls golf team opens season with busy week of three events

The Waukon girls golf team got its 2023 season off to a busy start with three meets this past week. The Lady Indians finished second to Crestwood at Cresco Monday, April 10 before finishing fourth at home behind Oelwein, MFL/MarMac and Postville Tuesday, April 11 and then finishing third behind Decorah and South Winneshiek at home Friday, April 14.

The Lady Indians were scheduled to play in a pair of meets this week, but had a North Fayette Valley meet Monday, April 17 canceled by winter weather. They will compete at Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, April 20 in a meet rescheduled from Tuesday, April 18 that was originally slated to be played in Waukon. The golf Tribe will then travel to Charles City Friday, April 28 before competing in a quadrangular event Saturday, April 29 in Decorah.

Waukon girls track team wins own Early Bird Invitational, finishes second at New Hampton Invitational in season’s first week of competition double duty

The Waukon girls track team pulled its first double-duty in competition this past week, taking part in a pair of meets in the same week for the first time this season. The track Tribe made the host of home track and field advantage in winning its own Early Bird Invitational Tuesday, April 11 before finishing second at the New Hampton Invitational Thursday, April 13.

The Lady Indians will compete at Crestwood Tuesday, April 18 before taking part in the Kee Invitational in Lansing Thursday, April 20 and the North Fayette Invitational Friday, April 21. The Waukon girls will then host their own Indian Relays Tuesday, April 25 before competing at MFL/MarMac Thursday, April 27, with further details of the Indian Relays being printed in a shaded box elsewhere on this week’s Sports pages in the Wednesday, April 19, 2023 print and e-edition of The Standard.

The Kee girls track team got both of its scheduled meets in this past week for the first time this season, finishing in the top half of the team scoring in each of those meets. The Lady Hawks finished third in the nine-team Early Bird Invitational hosted by Waukon Tuesday, April 11 before coming in fifth out of 10 teams at the MFL/MarMac Invitational in Monona Thursday, April 13.

The Hawk tracksters were next scheduled to compete at the Crestwood Invitational Tuesday, April 18 before hosting their own Kee Invitational Thursday, April 20, details of which appear in a shaded box elsewhere on this week’s Sports pages. The Lady Hawks will then travel to Clayton Ridge Tuesday, April 25 before returning to MFL/MarMac Thursday, April 27.
