Letter to the Editor: Iowa is failing History

To the Editor:
Once, Iowa’s education ranked best in the nation. How times have changed. In a recent report evaluating K-12 civics and U.S. history standards from the non-partisan Fordham Institute, Iowa ranked in the bottom third of states, with a D grade for civics and an F for U.S. history. Iowa’s U.S. History standards, it seems, are “almost completely devoid of historical content.”

Given this, you’d be forgiven for thinking the governor and legislature might take steps to improve education for Iowa’s students. Republicans did pass and sign numerous bills affecting education, but none fix the problem. They allocated historically low funding for public schools and universities and eliminated diversity programs used by some schools to serve their students.

Split of home doubleheader with Oelwein accounts for Waukon softball team’s lone, high-powered win in six games this past week

First-time homers help Tribe to win ... The Waukon softball pair of sophomore first baseman Kiana Krueger (#11 in photo above) and freshman center fielder Kaitlyn Krambeer (#10 in photo below) get mobbed by their teammates after they both hit the first homeruns of their varsity softball careers in the Indians’ 9-7 home victory over Oelwein Wednesday, June 23. The two combined to drive in five of the Tribe’s nine runs in the win, joining senior shortstop Annika Headington in launching a pitch out of the ballpark in the victory, with Krueger hitting a two-run round-tripper in the second inning and Krambeer and Headington hitting a three-run and two-run bomb, respectively, in the decisive fourth inning of the contest. Mother Nature made this past week’s already busy schedule a little less busy for the Waukon softball team, as the Lady Indians had their Decorah Tournament scheduled for Saturday, June 26 rained out. Already playing a schedule of six games in five nights that included a pair of home doubleheaders, all of those six games being in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play, the softball Tribe was able to put just one of those in the win column.

COVID-19 vaccine is readily available in Allamakee County

For those not yet vaccinated, Allamakee County Public Health does have a good supply of vaccine and is highly encouraging everyone to receive it. Vaccine clinics are readily available every Friday afternoon for both prime and boost doses for Moderna. Currently, Johnson and Johnson one-dose vaccine is also available. These clinics are held at the main entrance to Veterans Memorial Hospital. Call 563-568-5660 to schedule an appointment.

The risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19 far outweighs any benefits of natural immunity. The COVID-19 vaccine, which is readily available locally, creates an antibody (immune system) response without having to experience sickness.
