Allamakee County Farm Bureau sponsoring Hat and Mitten Drive

The Allamakee County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a Hat & Mitten drive by placing containers in several locations around the county. According to Allamakee County Farm Bureau President Matthew Emerson, the goal is to collect many hats, mittens, snow pants and scarves that will be distributed to local schools in December, to be given to children in need of these items.

While everyone probably remembers Clark Kent emerging from a pay phone booth as Superman, it probably won’t be long until no one will remember seeing a pay phone booth on a sidewalk in their home town. Due to the increased usage of cell phones, pay phones and pay phone booths are becoming a thing of the past.

Food, monetary donations collected during Holiday Parade in downtown Waukon

The spirit of the season was evident at the recent Holiday Parade in downtown Waukon, sponsored by the Waukon Chamber of Commerce Monday evening, November 21. Parade-goers and participants donated 140 pounds of food and $120, all of which was split between the Allamakee County Relief Office and the Allamakee County Food Shelf.

The public is invited to an open meeting at the Allamakee County Farm Bureau meeting room in Waukon Tuesday, December 20 at 7 p.m. to visit with Representative Bob Hager. The meeting will be an opportunity to meet with Representative Hager prior to the upcoming legislative session.

Changes in Allamakee County rural dumpsites to begin this next week

Starting December 1, the rural dumpster program in Allamakee County will see changes. The rural contracts for waste haulers have a duration of five years, with a new contract beginning December 1 of this year. With recessionary times and county budgets shrinking, the move to a more cost-effective system for the future will be put into place.
