Benefit events for Castalia five-year-old set for Feb. 25

A series of benefit events are being scheduled for Kole Waterman, five-year-old son of Todd and Torie Waterman of rural Castalia. He was born three months prematurely, weighed two pounds, nine ounces at birth and came into this world with multiple complications, including a grade four brain bleed, a blood infection and respiratory distress syndrome.

Allamakee County Dairy Days Banquet is March 24

The 2012 Allamakee County Dairy Days Banquet will be held Saturday, March 24 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. The meal will be served from 7-8:30 p.m., with the program starting at 8 p.m. The annual celebration recognizes the importance of the dairy industry in Allamakee County and the contributions dairy families make to this important industry.

Waukon Girl Scouts take part in "A Case for Smiles" at Winter Carnival

Waukon Girl Scouts were invited to attend a special Winter Carnival at Camp Tahigwa in rural Dorchester Saturday, January 21. One of the projects worked on during the event was a service project to donate pillowcases to “A Case for Smiles” through an organization called ConKerr Cancer. "A Case for Smiles" and ConKerr Cancer began in 2002 when founder Cindy Kerr’s son was diagnosed with cancer and she began making pillowcases to brighten up his hospital room and put a smile on his face.

Effigy Mounds Film Festival features "Armchair Travel, A Tour Around the World"

The Effigy Mounds National Monument 49th Annual Film Festival continues in February with “Armchair Travel, A Tour Around the World”. During February the following films and art displays are scheduled:
• February 11-13 - Walking Ireland &Trekking in Ireland: Take a walk across Ireland from the Cliffs of Moher along the Atlantic coast to the highest peaks in Ireland at Coomloughra Horseshoe.
Judith Engle, award-winning artist, will have the art display.

Funding awarded for area Safe Routes to School Plan

Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission (UERPC) has announced the awarding of funding in the amount of $115,000 for an area Safe Routes to School Plan. The Iowa Transportation Commission approved $1,512,885 in total funding for 14 Safe Routes to School program projects throughout the state. Five projects were awarded for non-infrastructure and nine were awarded for infrastructure.

Waukon Dental and associated area offices hosting "Have a Heart" Day

The doctors and staff of Waukon Dental, Dental Associates of Decorah, P.C., Family Dentistry Associates of Monona, and Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien (celebrating 18 years) will be hosting their “Have a Heart” day again this year. Area residents are encouraged to participate in the annual “Have a Heart” day scheduled by area health care providers Saturday, February 11.

Snowshoe Clinic to be offered this Saturday

The Allamakee County Conservation Board will offer a snowshoeing clinic at the Yellow River State Forest Headquarters, located at 729 State Forest Road, Harpers Ferry, this Saturday, February 4. The clinic will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Registration is open to all age groups. Basic instruction will be offered at the beginning of the program and participants will be able to snowshoe on trails. Trail routes will vary from easy to moderate levels of difficulty.
