Plans underway to commemorate 10th anniversary of September 11 attacks

Jerry Halverson, Chairman of the Allamakee County Republican Central Committee, is seeking assistance in helping co-sponsor a 2011 Patriots Day celebration being planned at the Waukon City Park in honor of the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. The event is being planned for Sunday, September 11 at 1 p.m. and will include the honoring of area service men and women who will be returning or have returned from service since the attacks.

IPTV "Reading Road Trip" breaks records

Kids and families across Iowa spent time riding in a spaceship, throwing snowballs at a Yeti monster, and pledging to watch less television during Iowa Public Television’s fifth-annual summer "Reading Road Trip". At 65 Iowa libraries, a record 15,465 people attended these high-energy events hosted by IPTV KIDS Clubhouse host Dan Wardell - 2,290 more than last year and 1,323 more than the previous record, set in 2008.

Monday search warrant results in arrest on drug and related charges

Monday, August 8, the Waukon Police Department conducted a search warrant at 14 Clinton Street SE in Waukon. During the warrant execution, drug-related items were located and seized.
As a result of the search, Michael Goyer, age 57, was arrested and charged with possession of controlled substance with intent to manufacture, drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief, and harassment. The Waukon Police Department was assisted by the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office, the Postville Police Department K-9 unit, and the Allamakee County Attorney’s Office.

Final "Music on Main" concert of the summer to feature Michelle Lynn

Monday, August 8 concludes this year’s  Music on Main summer music series with local performer Michelle Lynn.
The concert will take place at 6 p.m. in the courtyard at 101 W. Main, with the serving of hot dogs, chips and soda beginning at 5:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair, as seating is limited.
This week’s event is sponsored by the Waukon Chamber of Commerce, Cook Insurance Agency and GF Mutual Insurance Association.

Northeast Iowa Regional Housing Trust Fund annual meeting Aug. 25

The Northeast Iowa Regional Housing Trust Fund will hold its annual meeting Thursday, August 25 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Upper Explorerland Conference Room, 134 W. Greene Street in Postville.
Everyone is invited to attend this public meeting to learn about the Trust Fund and its application procedures and about the type of home repair projects funded thus far. Public feedback on the Housing Assistance Plan is important to the process and copies will be available for review.

ACPI production is a "Beauty" despite weather that was a "Beast"

More than 600 audience members attended the Allamakee Community Players, Inc. production of "Beauty and the Beast" that took to the stage in the Waukon High School Auditorium July 15-17. Soaring temperatures and humidity were combatted by the cooling contributions of bottled water and other cooling measures made by Quillin's Food Ranch, Fareway Economical Food Stores, Dollar General, Pamida, Kwik Star, Village Farm and Home of Waukon, and Moore's IGA of Lansing and Postville.

ISU Extension Youth Fishing Camp to be held August 3

Iowa State University Extension will be hosting a Fishing Camp Wednesday, August 3 at the McGregor Boat Landing from 1-5 p.m. Fishing Camp is for youth completing Kindergarten through sixth grades.  Participants will have a chance to catch the big one aboard the Maiden Voyage Tours Riverboat using basic equipment and tackle.
Youth will also experience a unique hands-on backwater experience. Life jackets will be provided to those youth without one.
