Cemetery Restoration workshop Saturday

A Cemetery Restoration workshop has been scheduled for Saturday, September 24 from 10 a.m.-12 noon at Sixteen Cemetery in Linton Township of Allamakee County. The workshop is free and open to the public.
The workshop is supported by the Linton Township Trustees and a rain date has been scheduled for October 1. Workshop leaders will stay later to answer specific questions and/or give demonstrations as requested by attendees.

"Northeast Iowa Get Your Rear In Gear" 5K Run/Walk to be held October 1 in Waukon

The second annual “Get Your Rear in Gear” 5K Run and Walk will be held locally Saturday, October 1 and begin at St. Patrick Catholic School, which is located at 106 Second Street SW in Waukon. Pre-registration for the event through September 27 can be accomplished by filling out the registration form in this week's print edition of The Standard and sending it, along with the $20 pre-registration fee for adults, $12 for children 12 and under, to the address indicated on the form.

Spieker achieves Eagle Scout rank

Donald M. Spieker, age 18, son of Mary Catherine Tillman of Waukon and formerly of Cresco, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank of Boy Scouts of America. He now serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 66 in Decorah.

Robey Memorial Library notes continued increase in usage, including some all-time record numbers

Robey Memorial Library in Waukon has noted that usage of the facility and the services it offers has risen for the sixth consecutive fiscal year, reaching record-setting proportions in some cases. “We circulated over 48,000 materials last year, most of which were printed books, but also audiobooks, CDs and DVDs. We also circulated a couple hundred digital audio and e-books for the first time ever,” said Rick Meyer, library director.

Waukon Scouting community to host "50 Reunion" this Saturday for Eagle Scouts

It's a "50 Reunion", as the Waukon community now has 50 Eagle Scouts and Waukon Boy Scout Troop 64 has 50 Eagle Scouts. The reunion will take place for Waukon's Eagle Scouts, their families and former and current leaders Saturday night, September 24 in the upstairs meeting area of the Vet's Hall in Waukon. A social hour will begin at 6 p.m. and supper will be served at 7 p.m. with a short program to follow.

Nobles Island Boat Ramp to be closed for road repair

Nobles Island Boat Ramp, located four miles south of Harpers Ferry, will be closed Thursday, September 22 and Friday, September 23 to accommodate road repair of damages stemming from the train derailment that took place in that area in June of this year. The landing will be open Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25, and then closed again the following week of September 26-29. Dates may vary due to weather conditions. The Harpers Ferry Landing at the Allamakee County Conservation Board Office will be open for boat access.

Fourth Annual Big Pumpkin Contest to be held this Sunday

The fourth annual Big Pumpkin contest is scheduled for this Sunday, September 25 in Waukon. The event, which takes place at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds, will begin with weigh-in at 9:30 a.m., with those big pumpkins being on display that day and this year’s winners being crowned at a 12:30 p.m. awards ceremony.
