LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor:
This letter is directed to the person who threw our dog, Brown Bear, into the dumpster along the Upper Iowa River.
Even though she has been blind the past two years, she has been a close family pet since she was a puppy. We didn't realize she followed us out the driveway Friday morning, and she would have found her way home if you hadn't pulled your cruel stunt.
We don't blame the sheriff's office for shooting her. They were only doing their job.

FROM THE MAYOR'S DESK

What makes people do the unthinkable? I recently read a newspaper story about a mother who purposely drove her vehicle off a 25-ft. cliff and into the Mississippi River, killing herself, five-year-old twin boys and another eight-year-old son. This didn't happen in some far off place; it happened right here in Iowa.

AND THEN I WROTE ...

. . . that there is a line in an old standard song that goes: "Don't you know that Sunday morning you can sleep late?
That was the case for the 36 years of my newspaper career. At least five, and sometimes six days a week, I got out of bed just before 6 a.m. so that I could be at work sometime between 7:30 and 8 a.m. With Sunday mass at 10 a.m., I could stay in bed an hour longer.
