THE VIEW FROM HERE

It's funny that Wanda should mention the "terrible twos" in her column this week since that happens to be a dilemma, or phase, with which I have become very familiar in recent months. It is also the reason for the frazzled state that seems to be norm to me lately as I chase my daughter through grocery store aisles and search for feet beneath the clothing racks at Wal-Mart, trying to discretely scold her for hiding as she lets out a shriek of laughter, very satisfied and full of herself for a brief moment.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To the Editor:
I read Dick Sullivan's letter in the July 19 issue. He argues that the land surrounding Effigy Mounds NM would be better kept on the tax rolls.
There is some good earth around EMNM, but we all know what ag land gets at auction, especially what five-acre plots without a well get when they are away from a paved road, and proportionately, what such land brings in tax revenue to the county.

WANDA'S WORLD

The other day I stopped, took a deep breath, and looked around, suddenly realizing that I am profoundly into another new phase of my life. To put it simply, it's the "Child Home from College for the Summer" phase.
I'll be OK, I told myself. After all, I survived childbirth, the terrible twos, and the sweet sixteen (also known as "driver's license") phases with only minor scrapes and much thanks to the Tylenol company. I can handle this, too.
What my bank account can handle is another story.

AND THEN I WROTE ...

. . . that I sometimes feel as though I was put on earth and destined to write a local newspaper column so that you, my readers, might experience vicariously, as I actually run through them, "the thousand natural plagues that man is heir to," as another, more famous writer put it.
In the past, I have been able to describe my spinal disc removal, (mid 1960s); the replacement of the mitral valve in my heart with a metal one (1993); and just this year, my Type II diabetes diagnosis.
Now I can dutifully report on cataract surgery.
