FROM THE MAYOR'S DESK

It seems the whole nation is caught up in the "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire" craze. Even our kids are into it. Family trips in the car don't even reach the edge of town that our kids aren't asking if we'd like to play "Millionaire."
However, you won't find us asking how far it is from the earth to the sun. An example of the Jones version might be - "Oscar the Grouch lives in an A. Tent, B. Box, C. Garbage Can, or D. House." Sometimes we need to phone an imaginary friend or do the "50/50," but we can normally generate a millionaire before we reach our destination.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor:
Just how much land can we sell in Allamakee County to the State, DNR, etc.? In regards to an article in the Waukon Standard, Nussle and an Elkader conservationist are talking of taking another 1,000 acres out of the peoples hands forever.
These purchases by the state take land out of production, and tax money our county needs, as well as land off the market forever.

AND THEN I WROTE ...

Duh!
The experts last week declared the drought in Iowa officially over.
Those of us in northeast Iowa sort of knew that, didn't we? In fact, we probably came to that conclusion about a month ago. Right after the first of a series of flood warnings was issued for the area. Since then, it has rained more days than it has not, and some of those rains were not gentle soakers, but wind-driven cloudbursts providing an inch or two or three or more water.

TWO "CRAZY" HOT DAYS, BUT THE SHOPPING WAS GOOD

Even the heat steaming off downtown sidewalks couldn't keep folks from turning out at Waukon's annual Crazy Days, held July 14 and 15.
Local business owners report that while the crowd numbers seemed a bit less than last year, their sales totals remained level with previous years. That translates to a smaller pool of buyers finding more good deals apiece.
