SOFTBALL INDIANS SUFFER FIRST NEIC LOSS AT WAVERLY, WIN OTHER TWO GAMES THIS WEEK

The Waukon Indian softball team experienced its first loss of this season in Northeast Iowa Conference play in winning two of three games this past week. After handling Starmont by a 7-0 result Monday, July 3 at home, the Indians were dealt a 4-1 NEIC loss at Waverly-Shell Rock Wednesday, July 5. The Tribe bounced back, however, to claim a 4-3 non-conference victory Friday, July 7 over Kee High at New Albin.

BASEBALL INDIANS PICK UP FOUR MORE WINS IN 10 GAMES THIS WEEK, GIVE UP JEFF HOUG TOURNEY TITLE TO KEE HIGH

The Waukon Indian baseball team played a full slate of 10 games within a week's time this past week, also having an average amount of success during that full slate with four wins in those 10 games. The Tribe took a pair of games from Independence, 12-5 and 7-1, in a tournament turned doubleheader Saturday, July 1, dropped a doubleheader at top-rated Oelwein Monday, July 3, 10-0 in five innings and 9-2, and fell at Starmont by a 6-3 final Wednesday, July 5.

BEULAH ODEGARD

Beulah Elvina Odegard, 86, of Waukon, died Saturday, July 1, 2000 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 5th at 11:00 a.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church, rural Waterville, with Rev. Ken Kimball and Rev. David Schafer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Martin Funeral home in Waukon.

ROY PHILLIP LOVEN

Roy P. Loven, 97, of Waukon, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 8th at 10:30 am at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe and Rev. David Schafer officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

CRISPIN DONALD KURT

Crispin D. Kurt, 57, of Waukon, died Thursday, July 6, 2000 at Veterans memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 8th at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon with Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial of ashes will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may greet the family from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

RIDING THROUGH NORTHEAST IOWA

Over 75 riders attended the first annual BRANEI bike ride, passing through Waukon midmorning this past Saturday, July 8. After welcome refreshments at the Area Development Center, the bikers completed a loop around the communities of Elkader, Postville, Decorah and back to Elkader.

VMH CUTS BUDGET IN VARIOUS AREAS TO ENSURE FUTURE VIABILITY

As hospitals throughout the nation continue to struggle financially to, at best, break-even in the midst of decreasing Medicare and insurance reimbursements coupled with increasing costs, reevaluation of expenses has become a necessity for the vitality of even the largest hospitals. Budget and program cuts, lay-offs and, in extreme cases, closing of some outreach centers has resulted.
