SWITCHBACK

They've had youngsters swinging pigtails and bouncing small knees in county schools. And they can make the Allamakee elderly dance, if only down the corridors of memory, where a lifetime can slip inside a few bars of wistful Celtic tunes.
Then, there's Dar's Place. When Switchback's Brian Fitzgerald and Marty McCormack bring their blend of oh-so original music and traditional Irish jigs through the swinging screen door, the result is nothing short of a boot-stomping, Budweiser-banging good time.

FRAMING COUNTY FARMS

The photograph above, compiled by Waukon Standard photographer Lou Swenson, shows an area farm, resting safely it seems, the forefront of the American flag. The image stands as a startling reminder, amidst all the glorious fireworks, thick potato salad and metling ice cream, that the July 4 holiday means owning the freedom to plant as we see fit in our fields, even when it rains down on our efforts.

BROTHER LEO TRAVELS AUSTRALIA'S VAST TERRITORY; VIEWS ABORIGINAL ART EXHIBIT IN CITY MUSEUM

By Leo V. Ryan, C.S.V.
From Cairns, the Ocean Explorer 1 traveled North along the Australian Queensland coast. Our destinations were Cape York, the Torres Straits and Darwin. Cape York is the "tip" of Australia, the northern most point, wild and underpopulated. Torres Straits is like our Panama Canal, a passage linking the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territories.

THE VIEW FROM HERE

Mama's boy and daddy's girl - it's no accident that these terms came to being. And though many of us would deny being so, the fact of the matter is that it's human nature to be particularly close to one parent. Perhaps it's the element of nurture and care that a mother has to offer to her son's life while the world around him expects an image of independence, fearlessness and masculinity. Perhaps it's the sense of security a father can offer his daughter in a world that, many times, seems very frightening and insecure.

FROM THE MAYOR'S DESK

At the end of this month, I will have six months under my mayoral belt. I thought it might be interesting to look at some things, including how it compares to what I had expected, what has happened during those months and what I see happening in the future.
To begin, I'll say that so far (knock on wood), I have truly enjoyed the mayoral experience. I thought that there would be a lot more disgruntled people either phoning or stopping me on the street. That has actually been very limited, and though it may occur more in the future, for now anyway, things seem to be going well.

HITTING H0ME

I tell myself I don't have time to indulge in a column today. I'm busy with the health, farm and other miscellaneous news under an early deadline.
But something is tugging at me to be addressed, anatomically somewhere between my heart and gut. I know the something to be the fact that today, June 30, would have been my fifth wedding anniversary, if my ex-husband and I were not, in fact, divorced.

LOCAL RESIDENT CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY IN "SEVENS"

Local resident Victor Byrnes, born July 7, 1923, is due to celebrate a birthday this week.
But by no means is it an ordinary birthday. Byrnes, born July 7, is the 7th son of Larry and Norah Byrnes.
Furthermore, on the 7th Byrnes will turn 77.
We guess five sevens to be something of a milestone. Happy Birthday Victor.
