CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSES STREET REPAIR

All council members were on hand for Monday evening's Waukon City Council meeting.
In a unanimous action, the council voted to approve the hiring of Robert Campbell as temporary working water/sewer supervisor and Randy Murphy as temporary working street supervisor with an immediate start date.

THREE SEEK ALLAMAKEE FAIR QUEEN CROWN

Every event needs its representative royalty, and this year's Allamakee County Fair is no exception.
The fair, running July 19 - 23, will crown a reigning queen on Wednesday evening, July 19, at approximately 8:15 p.m. The event will take place during a break in the scheduled Whitesidewalls performance.
Three county young women vie for this year's Fair Queen title. They include Danielle Delaney of Lansing, Alexis Gunderson of Postville, and Erin Daley of Waukon.

SISTER KRAMER DEPARTS FOR DUBUQUE AFTER 15 YEARS OF SERVICE AT ST. PAT'S

When she donned her habit for her recent farewell festivities, people saw something they weren't accustomed to.
Over the past 15 years, residents have come to expect the sight of Sister Margaret Anne Kramer, looking just like "one of us" in a regular, casual skirt and blouse.
She's been busy holding meetings, teaching school, or just joining other area women over coffee for a welcome chat. "I'll miss the people," she says. "They've been family to me."

STUDENTS SHEAR MORE THAN SHEEP WITH FFA CO-OP EXPERIENCE

It's the week before the fair and everyone is busy getting ready.
There's 4-H projects to complete, last minute seams to sew, jams and pies to make, machinery to shine and animals to wash, clip, brush, and in the case of the agricultural class at Waukon Senior High School, sheep to shear before show day on Thursday.
Known as the Waukon FFA Sheep Co-op, the group is made up of nine students, ranging in age from 16 to 18 years, and Agricultural Instructor Nate Gebel, who has been teaching the group the responsibilities of raising 21 Suffolk sheep.

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Michael Hunter Egan was born June 28 at Veterans Memorial Hospital. At birth, he weighed 6 pounds, 2 1/2 ounces and was 20 inches long. Michael's parents are Mike and Laurie Egan of Monona.
His grandparents are Myrtle Egan of Harpers Ferry and Lucille Smock of Decorah. Great-grandparents are Leo and Emma Tollefson, also of Decorah.
Michael joins two brothers: Christopher, 23, and Tyler, 14, and two sisters: Tiffany, 17, and Taylor, 8.

Couple to wed at Zion UCC

Lois and Loren Beneke of Waukon wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Amy, to Adrian Evans, son of Allayne and Lewis Evans of Ottawa, Canada.
Amy is a 1993 graduate of Waukon High School and a 1998 graduate of Iowa State University. She has completed two years teaching kindergarten and first grade in the Van Buren Community Schools, Stockport Center.

Stacy Lynn Kray and Eric Wayne Thorstenson were united in marriage Sept. 18, 1999, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Newhall. Pastor Steven Rempfer presided over the 4 p.m. ceremony. Parents of the bride are David and Gloria Kray of Newhall. The groom's parents are Wayne and Ronda Thorstenson of Waukon.

60 years of marriage celebrated

Francis and Leonette Kernan will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday, July 23, with an 8:15 mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Wexford. An open house in their honor will he held from noon to 3 p.m. at the Wexford Hall. All friends and relatives are invited.

WAUKON FFA MEMBERS ASSISTS IN FARM SAFETY DAY CAMP

Members of the Waukon FFA assisted in the presentation of the Farm Safety Daycamp at the Allamakee County fairgrounds in Waukon. Members participated as group leaders and assisted in the direction of camp participants. Waukon FFA members participating were: Emily Jones, Callie Foster, Brian Melcher, Mike Burke, Mike Horns, Monica Ehrhardt, Jenny Grimstad, Tara Snitker, Laurel Snitker, Brooks Kruger, Tony Beneke, Nick Tilleraas, Josh Troendle and Kevin Martin.

NUSSLE TESTIFIES WITH ELKADER CONSERVATIONIST ON REQUEST TO EXPAND EFFIGY MOUNDS BOUNDARY

Congressman Jim Nussle and conservationist Larry Stone of Elkader have testified in support of a request to allow the National Park Service to buy adjacent land for expansion of the Effigy Mounds National Monument in Allamakee County. They appeared before the House Committee on Resources, National Parks and Public Lands Subcommittee.
