VMH STAFF ADDRESSES AMBULANCE ISSUES DURING BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING

Addressing the Veterans Memorial Hospital ambulance situation at the July 24 Allamakee County Board of Supervisors meeting were Mike Myers, VMH administrator, Scott Knode, VMH chief financial officer, and Jeff Mitchell, Emergency Medical Service coordinator.
Also in attendance were Bernard Welsh and Richard Leiran, members of the county ambulance board.
"Medicare," Myers informed the Board, "has been cracking down on what they consider a 'necessary' ambulance trip. More and more, things are being defined as 'medically unnecessary'."

WAUKON DAYS CELEBRATES AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE; DRAWS COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN SPIRIT OF TRADITION

When one thinks of summer in Allamakee County, one may envision farmers tending their alfalfa crops amidst acres of deep green stalks growing tall in their fields; the crack of a softball as it meets with the swing of a Louisville Slugger and the enthusiasm of a small-town crowd in the bleachers; the unmistakable smell of a barbecue; or carnival rides and cotton candy.

MURPHY, CAMPBELL APPOINTED INTERIM SUPERINTENDENTS FOR CITY

Randy Murphy and Bob Campbell have been appointed as interim superintendents of their respective departments for the City of Waukon. Murphy will temporarily take over the duties of street superintendent, while Campbell will do likewise for the sewer/water department. The two will serve in those respective roles from the June 30 retirement date of former street superintendent DuWayne Snitker and sewer/water superintendent Francis Kessel until the hiring of their replacements.

ERIN DALEY REIGNS AS QUEEN OVER 147TH ANNUAL ALLAMAKEE COUNTY FAIR

Erin Daley was crowned queen of the 147th Allamakee County Fair at a pageant Wednesday, July 19 to kick-off this year's events. The title was passed to Daley by former queen Laura Palmer at the grandstand performance of The Whitesidewalls that evening.
Daley is the daughter of Neal and Nancy Daley of Waukon and will begin her junior year at Waukon Senior High School this fall. She is active in basketball, track and Key Club, and is also an honor roll student.

WAUKON SWIM CLUB UNDEFEATED IN FOUR EARLY JULY MEETS

The Waukon Swim Club had a very successful early July, going undefeated by winning three dual meets and also claiming the team title at its own Waukon Invitational. The Waukon club outswam West Union at home Thursday, July 6 by a 374-355 final result before topping the seven-team field at its own Waukon Invitational meet by more than 50 points Saturday, July 8. Waukon then left Cresco in its wake by a 546-188 final at home Tuesday, July 11 before topping a combined Monona/Postville squad on the road Thursday, July 13 by a 472-232 end result.

SEASON ENDS FOR INDIAN BASEBALL TEAM WITH 5-2 LOSS TO NEW HAMPTON IN CLASS 3A DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2000 season for the Waukon Indian baseball team came to an end Tuesday, July 18, as the baseball Tribe dropped a 5-2 decision to the New Hampton Chickasaws in Class 3A District Championship play in Decorah. Despite a valiant effort, the Indian diamond dwellers could not quite overcome a 5-0 headstart they gave the Chickasaws in the first two innings of play.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON ZONING VARIANCE REQUEST

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Waukon Zoning Board of Adjustment will conduct a public hearing in the Council Room, City Hall, 101 Allamakee Street, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2000, on a variance request. The variance in question has been requested by Ann M. Fossurn who seeks to construct a 12 ft by 10 ft. porch on the front of the residence at 612 West Street SW within the required front yard setback. The variance application is available for public inspection at the office of the City Clerk during regular business hours.

LOCAL GRAD ACCEPTS ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL POSITION

Kathie Robinson, a 1981 Waukon High School graduate and daughter of Charles and Lois Rolfs of Waukon, recently accepted a position as assistant principal at Valley View Elementary School with McHenry School District 15 in McHenry, IL.
After fifteen years of teaching, she will begin her new position in administration this fall.

THE VIEW FROM HERE

As I sit here now in the dark, writing solely by the light of this screen as my little ones lay sleeping close by, I can only be thankful for how fulfilling these past seven weeks have been for me.
